Omega 3's are the beneficial fatty acids found in many products, but most prevalent in deep water fish.

It's Good to be Fishy

Omega 3's are amino acids found in the body of any protein-producing animal. Omega 3's are specifically made up of EPA (ecosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Omega 3 supplements most commonly include these acids in a ratio of 3/2 (EPA/DHA). ALA (alpha-linelenic acid) is also an omega 3, though more commonly found in vegetables and not used in omega 3 supplements.

The fleshy parts of deep water fish are one of the best sources of these fatty acids, thus most omega 3 vitamins are purified, processed fish oils. Some omega supplements include omega 6's and 9's as well, but these fatty acids aren't nearly as beneficial.

Benefits of Omega 3 Supplements

1. Less Pain and Inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly EPA, have a very positive effect on your inflammatory response.

2. Cardiovascular Health. Fish oils help lower cholesterol, triglycerides, LDLs and blood pressure, while at the same time increasing good HDL cholesterol.

3. Better Brain Function. Omega 3's have been known to improve memory, recall, and reasoning function. A pregnant woman can actually increase the IQ of her child be taking fish oil supplements while pregnant.

4. Cancer Prevention. Taking omega 3's has been found to reduce the likelihood of breast, colon, and prostate cancer.

EPA vs. DHA

Remember, when you start to look for omega 3 supplements, always remember to keep the ratio of EPA to DHA 3 to 2. If you have a 500mg fish oil capsule, 300mg should be EPA and 200mg should be DHA.
