Doomsday 2012: Fact or Fiction?
Ranked #1,647 in Culture & Society, #38,743 overall
Do you believe the world will end this Dec 21?
Nostradamus said it, the Bible says it, the Quran and even science. They all say that the world will come to an end, someday. But will that day come in 2012? Some say yes, and some, no!
There are those who firmly believe it will happen. Some say it's a money-making hoax. The idea that the world will end next year came about with the discovery of the Mayan calendar. It has spawned documentaries, movies, Internet discussions and forums. In fact Doomsday 2012 has become viral on the Internet.
What exactly is in the Mayan calendar that spawned this craze?

What's In a Calendar?
After calculation, it was found that the world would end in 2012. The Mayan calendar is said to have predicted "the rise of White Man Gods from the Sea", on March 5th 1519, which was the exact date of the rise of Cortes and his Conquistadors from the waters.
But keep in mind that the Mayans did not actually state that the world is going to end on 2012. It was those experts, the "experts' who discovered the calendar and interpreted its secrets, who came up with the doomsday idea. And the interpretation was, since the dates on the calendar did not go beyond 2012, the world will end on the last day in the calendar. That's an unspoken acceptance that no other calendars other than the Mayans' are correct.
Strange that none amongst the bright minds that studied the Mayan calendar said anything about the possibility that there could be another circular stone calendar with the years Dec 2012 - Dec 6012 engraved on it. Or that there are others which have not yet been discovered, were lost or destroyed or that it exist but someone is hiding it as a souvenir.
Couldn't it be possible that the ancient Mayans are so much like our modern executives who make their plans in one-year terms, 2-year, 5-year and so forth? Isn't it possible that the Mayans planned their calendars in 5000-year periods? And that had their race not been so badly rattled by wars and diseases they would have add more years to their calendar at their next town hall meeting?
Countdown to Doomsday
Doomsday: December 21, 2012
Nostradamus et al
Doomsday believers even went as far as to tie the Mayan calendar with prophecies made by other people of wisdom to back their claims. There are those who claimed Nostradamus has prophesied about Doomsday 2012 - hence Nostradamus 2012. But did you know that the Nostradamus 2012 predictions only started coming to light after the Mayan calendar was discovered and the Doomsday 2012 came about? Why did we not hear a clear interpretation of Nostradamus 2012 prophecy before all the doomsday talk? Did you know too that the dates 21.12.12 or 12.21.12 are not found in Nostradamus writings? Did you know that Nostradamus said in a letter to his son that all his predictions are valid until the year 3797? That's well beyond 2012 so you can rest easy. It's commonly known that Pope Leo IX made a very important declaration in 1514. He stated, "I will not see the end of the world, nor will you my brethren, for its time is long in the future, 500 years hence." So, is the world going to end in 2012? According to Pope Leo IX, no! It's going to end 2 years latter.
Science is probably the most plausible source of information these days. More so, it is logical and based on observation and experiments and can be followed and believed by everyone. According to science, the sun is slowly expanding and will soon expand and become a big huge red giant. In fact, it will expand to such an extent that it will engulf our little 3rd rock. So, much before this "engulfing" takes place, the heat, gravity and chemical reactions will cause earth to become dead and lifeless. However, this phenomenon will take time to occur, 5 million years to be precise. Global warming is another phenomenon that could ultimately bring about the end of life on earth. Before that, there seems to be no immediate threats that would cause mass depletion of the earth's population. So, will the world end in 2012? Science doesn't think so!
The Sybillian Prophecies is said to prophecies when the world is going to end. Sybil was an oracle. In spite of being the best of her time, Sybil is not very well known in recent times. It was believed that when making a prophecy, Sybil went into a trance like state and the God Apollo would possess her body. This is how her prophecies were always true. She predicted the birth of Jesus as the "Man who would bring peace". In fact, her prophecy predicted His name as well. "Earth shaking" earthquakes have been seen in the past, and the Tsunami in 2004 and the recent cyclones have seen several cities submerged. As such, looks like Sybil's prophecy about the end of the world in 2012, might come true. So, according to Sybil the world is going to end in 2012.
The Quran is one of the most respected pieces of literature, for its scientific approach and accurate calculations about the future. The Quran has stated that the world will come to an end and there will be signs to show that the end is coming. The first being, "splitting of the moon" which has happened, when parts of the moon were brought back to earth for study. The second being the discovery of the Quran's mathematical code. This has also already taken place. The third, the creature "Made from the earth, it alerts the people that they have been oblivious to their Creator." This "creature" is believed to be the computer. The fourth being, appearance of God's messenger.
This messenger to inform the world of the last of all the holy scriptures. This prophecy was fulfilled in the month of Ramadan 1408. Seven such prophecies being fulfilled, mark the certainty of the "day of judgment". As per the complex calculations in the Quran, the world will come to an end in 1710 AH, which will be during 2280 AD.
So, according to the Quran the world is not going to end in 2012 but in 2280, it definitely will!
And no doubt Hollywood does not believe in Doomsday 2012 either. If they do they wouldn't bother making multi-million dollar films to make multi-million dollar profits only to lose it next year. Unless they have found where they'll end up after dying and know how to get there with all their money.
