Pukeko On Homeschooling - A Collection of my Homeschool Writings

On Homeschooling Is My Collection of Resources, Links, Educational Materials and Fun

We are one of those families who have always home educated our children. We do it for so many reasons, with lifestyle rising to the top of our list. More importantly, we stick on homeschooling because we like the people our girls are growing up to be.

Squidoo is my latest passion and I try to incorporate our girls learning in my lenses where ever I can. You will find their fictional stories, artwork and research in many of my writings below.

I have been publishing a variety of pages on homeschooling topics and have been requested by a few to pull it all together in one spot. I offer this "lensography" as an accumulation of the growing number of educational pages I have written. We are secular in our studies and offer a scientific explanation for most controversial topics.

Free Resources on Homeschooling Topics

There are over 250 free links between these pages.

I have been bookmarking, collecting and organizing free internet resources for years. There are about 250 links to free resources here amongst these five pages. They are organized by category, with history, music, english and general webpages found on Homeschool Resources - Fun and Educational!

Experiments and Projects

Homeschooling in day to day life

Sometimes in the name of science, sometimes just in the name of fun, we love to do experiments and field trips. Here are a few that we photographed.

Great Baking Recipes with Kids

Cooking is one of those life activities that incorporates many of the basic educational units. We use language (to read the recipe), math (measuring) and science (mixing). But that's not why we do it. The girls just love to bake, and we all love to eat the results.

If you like gooey, fudgy, rich chocolate brownies, the recipe here is a must try. Of these, I think that making scones rates highest on the kid "fun" scale.

Family Games and Challenge Games

Another great way to have fun while learning. We still have a weekly family game night, but it doesn't stop there. Here are some of our favorite family games, solitaire games, and even an on-line game we made.

My All Time Favorite Books on Homeschooling

If we could only have one book, this is it. We have been reading to the girls since they were very little. Now it is an event. A novel can be the perfect event for a rainy day, as long as it is the right book. Jim Trelease not only offers lists of great reading material, he offers recommended age levels and explains why.

The Read-Aloud Handbook: Sixth Edition

Amazon Price: $5.61 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

We use this book year after year. This is the updated fifth edition of The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease, our version is slightly older. The first half of the book explains the importance of reading out-loud with our children and then goes on to use a Q&A format to address television, library funding and the Harry Potter phenomenon. The back half is a "Treasury of Read-Alouds" suggesting starting points for parents. He has long lists of suggested reads, with brief descriptions and recommended age levels.

Other Great Reference Books

There are so many books out there. Aside from the Jim Trelease book above, we have kept only five for reference.

I'm commend anyone who homeschools their children. I'm really happy to see that you're a proponent of homeschooling. This is a awesome lens with tons of resources on homeschooling. Keep up the good work! :)

Wonderful collection! I agree - you can't actually prevent kids from learning, esp when parents realise it's best to sometimes get out of the way and let them get on with it.

    Blessed :-)

A good resource for your homeschooling families. I know someone who is considering homeschooling, and will share your page with her.

omg! I love homeschooling. I have made several lenses myself on different things we do. I have opened lots of yours to go check out!
Unfortunately I only have one child left at home and can't talk my daughter in to allowing me to homeschool her children, but I sure wish she would let me.

A wonderful and educational lens you've written and collected here, don't know how you find the time to do it all so well. I just started on Squidoo and it takes me for ages to understand how it all works and getting things the way I like. Haven't gotten the hang of it yet.

In my country, The Netherlands, homeschooling is not allowed by law.
