Strange name but it is a powerful and fun tool used for networking and making friends on-line.

There are several definitions out there about Twitter - one taken directly from the site describes Twitter as a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

That about sums it up. It is a quick, interactive method of communicating what you are doing using a sentence or two and sending it out to all of your followers. Similar to Facebook and MySpace, Twitter is social networking and it is a great way to stay in touch with your friends and business associates.

Great - but what are followers?

Followers are people on the site that choose to follow what you are doing. Whether you are catching up on a day's sleep, sitting on your porch drinking a cup of coffee, or updating your blog; you communicate with the Twitter world about it. You can have followers and you can follow others.

If you find someone who is doing something of interest to you, whether it is a personal activity that you share in common, or a business interest, you can follow that person and keep up-to-date on their activities. They can likewise follow you if they so choose.

It is called micro-blogging. Staying in touch with your network of friends using a sentence or two rather than writing an entire entry in your blog. Twitter only allows a maximum of 140 characters at a time so you keep it short and simple. But this is extremely effective. It enables you to read through a lot more content quickly and catch up on your friend's activity for the moment.Twitter refers to these little one or two sentences as tweets.

It seems much more real-time than most social networking sites and it is very user friendly. .

So how can Twitter be used in my Network Marketing Business?

You can use Twitter to send updates to content you have created for your business. It is great exposure and a great way to promote your business.

You can include links to sites you find interesting or educational at the same time. People get to know you through your micro-blogging and you can build powerful relationships this way for your business.

As you "tweet", your "tweets" can be seen on Facebook, your blog and now Squidoo pages even offer a module to follow your "tweets". One sentence can reach a very large audience with the touch of a button.

Be careful not to be overly-promotional

Like any social networking site, you have to be careful not to be too overly-promotional. Being a taker without ever giving is not accepted very well. It is social networking and you need to still build relationships first with your followers and those you follow.

If you provide powerful, valuable information, you will be seen as a leader and expert in your field and people will want to follow your updates and form relationships with you.

Twitter is a lot of fun and it is starting to cause a stir in the social networking scene.
