The Rose in Poetry

A garden of roses in violet and yellow
I see through my kitchen glass
The worms nourish from the earth below
On Nature's perfectly painted canvas

That one, there, won a medal
From the Royal Rose Society
So, in that spot I let it settle
To bask in its notoriety

The thorny branches I prune in spring
And blooms delight through summer
A two-tone fleur of white and pink
Is just now attracting a hummer

When the time is right, I harvest the hips
To brew a tea served hot or iced
I relish my tea and take long deep sips
In the stores this is steeply priced

My garden of roses gives me console
Around 50 bushes and climbers have I
The virtues of roses I love to extol
They offer me a wordless lullaby

A still life is upon the wall
Of stemmed roses in a vase
This brightens the entry hall
Much better than it was

Delicate roses painted on the porcelain
The artist did with such an even hand
And any eye since can surely ascertain
The love transferred for ages planned

This slender stem doth need a vase
To hold it up with such esteem
And give it respite from nature's laws
A thing of beauty we do deem
It's petals shall keep tight a while
A lover's heart to right beguile
Aloft, a hint of fragrance flies
That attracts nose as well as eyes

Plant a rose bush for your heirs
And as long as someone cares
It will very long give delight
With blooms in summer light

She very much likes this garden
To read, reflect, take her parden
From the busy world outside the fence
A humble respite, this, her defense

After a time she rises to her feet
Stows her book, for now complete
And walks forward down one garden trail
Winding through bushes with clear avail

She'll wind her way and do her tour
Always whiffing the roses' store
Enjoying this, this simple bliss
An hour she would never miss
