A True Gangsta Movie!
America loves gangster movies. After all, whether you love them or hate them, gangsters are part of the American fabric. Yes, like almost all things, we as Americans have romanticized them into almost folklore status, heroes if you will. Al Capone was anything but a hero, Machine Gun Kelly wasn't called that because he liked Daisey's. After Buggsy Segal finished The Flamingo casino back in the day, he caught one in the eye because it cost well over a million more than he promised.
Once upon a time in America (1984) is to this genre what Major League is to the Sports Movie genre. You simply can not claim to enjoy sports movies with out having seen Major League.
This lens will attempt to convey, not only the brilliance of Once Upon A Time, but the fact that, having such competition as Goodfellas (1990) and The Godfather, (1972) which was a masterpieces. And lets not forget Scarface (1983), Once Upon A Time Ranks # 7 on the top 20 Gangster films of our time.
I will also visit the actors that played the pivotal roles in Once Upon A Time, as they have proved their worth again, and again. De Niro was born to play a gangster, and James Woods simply becomes his character in every role he plays.
With all the fan fair of Scar Face which came out the year before, not to mention the length of Once Upon A Time, the ratings were high, but at Oscar time there were no nominations for that years Gangster movies, which is pretty remarkable when you see the work of Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth Mastrintonio. In fact, since The Godfather in 1972, the only "Gangster movie" I found that won anything at "Oscar time was Joe Pesci, for his remarkable work in Goodfellas, and Andy Garcia for Godfather Part III, which both came out in 1990.
Why I Love Once Upon A Time In America in 100 Words or Less
Once Upon a Time in America (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Amazon Price: $24.99 (as of 08/07/2008)
A true gangster movie with the best of the best; Robert DeNiro, and James Woods.
Casting for this movie was outstanding as matching the young hoods to their older selves was uncanny.
The scope of this movie was broad and superbly done by Sergio Leone. Spanning 40 years of underworld love, violence, and betrayal this movie hits the mark!
Go ahead, disagree. I dare you.
Make your argument good, I will post it here!
My stand here is that Once Upon A Time is "One of The Best" gangsta movies EVER. I know that is saying a lot. But when you consider all that goes into a gangsta movie, and to me, could this have happened this way? Well, it DID happen the way things are depicted in this movie. Prohibition was the boon of all organized crime in the 20's and 30's.
Once Upon A Time In America is in the top three best gangsta movies ever.

Well, as Gangster movies go, 'Once Upon A Time in America' was a great gangster movie, but I like "Godfather I & II", "Goodfellas", "City of God", "Scarface", "Hoodlum","Casino", "American Gangster" amid many others. Don't get me wrong, I love Sergio Leone's work, but I can't say it's the top 3 I've ever seen.
