Originally, I had a lens that was just going to focus on the bigger scientific awards. With the exceptions of a handful of "biggies" that I have listed below, there is no definitive list of major scientific awards.  I didn't realize what a massive project I had set out for myself.

Once the first lens got humongous, it occurred to me that it made more sense to create a different lens for each sub-section of science.  This is one of those lenses.

Cancer Research Awards

AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research
The AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research has been established to honor an individual who has made significant fundamental contributions to cancer research, either through a single scientific discovery or a body of work. These contributions, whether they have been in research, leadership, or mentorship, must have had a lasting impact on the cancer field and must have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to progress against cancer.
AACR-G.H.A. Clowes Memorial Award
The AACR and Eli Lilly and Company established this Award in 1961 to honor Dr. G.H.A. Clowes, who was a founding member of the AACR and a research director of Eli Lilly. The Clowes Award recognizes an individual with outstanding recent
AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research
Through the generous contribution of an anonymous donor, the AACR established this Award in 1979 to give recognition to a young investigator on the basis of meritorious achievement in cancer research. In accordance with the wishes of the donor, the recipient must be no more than 40 years of age by the time the award is received.
Kirk A. Landon-AACR Prize for Basic Cancer Research and The Dorothy P. Landon-AACR Prize for Translational Cancer Research
First presented in 2002 to heighten the attention of scientists and members of the general public to landmark scientific achievements in the continuing effort to prevent and cure cancer; to recognize and reward cancer scientists for these extraordinary accomplishments; and to stimulate the development of new thinking and novel concepts in both basic and translational research through the presentation of exciting scientific lectures by the Prize winners, thus inspiring other cancer researchers to uncover the mysteries of this complex disease.

The Prizes each consist of US$200,000 and a commemorative award.
AACR-Minorities in Cancer Research-Jane Cooke Wright Lectureship
The AACR is proud to announce (in 2006) the AACR-Minorities in Cancer Research-Jane Cooke Wright Lectureship. The lectureship is intended to give recognition to an outstanding scientist who has made meritorious contributions to the field of cancer research and who has, through leadership or by example, furthered the advancement of minority investigators in cancer research.
AACR-Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award
The AACR and the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation established this Award in 1977 to recognize research that has made, or promises to soon make, a notable contribution to improved clinical care in the field of cancer. In its desire to honor and provide incentive to investigators relatively early in their careers, the Foundation has stipulated that recipients not be more than 50 years of age at the time the Award is received. The Award is also restricted to individuals who are engaged in the practice of medicine and who reside in the Americas.
AACR-Women in Cancer Research-Charlotte Friend Memorial Lectureship (previously, WICR Keynote Lecture)
The AACR-Women in Cancer Research-Charlotte Friend Memorial Lectureship was established in 1998 in honor of renowned virologist and discoverer of the Friend virus, Dr. Charlotte Friend, for her pioneering research on viruses, cell differentiation, and cancer. The lecture is intended to give recognition to an outstanding female or male scientist who has made meritorious contributions to the field of cancer research and who has, through leadership or by example, furthered the advancement of women in science.
General Motors Cancer Research Award
Since the inception of the General Motors Cancer Research Prizes in 1978 the General Motors Corporation has provided approximately 27 million dollars of support to recognize progress and accomplishments in cancer research. Formerly, three prizes were awarded annually, however, beginning in the 2006 prize year, only a single prize will be awarded. The name of the award will be the General Motors Cancer Research Award (GMCRA) and it will consist of $250,000 and a gold medal.
Award for Distinguished Achievement in Cancer Research
The Award for Distinguished Achievement in Cancer Research was first presented in 1978. The winners are selected by an independent peer-review selection committee whose members are grant administrators of current Bristol-Myers Squibb Unrestricted Cancer Research Grants. Award recipients are:
Oliver R. Grace Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research
The Institute's Oliver R. Grace Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research recognizes the contributions of dedicated laypersons whose leadership has had a significant impact on cancer research. The award is named in memory of Oliver R. Grace, the founding chairman of the Cancer Research Institute, who died in 1992.
Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Awards
This is the link to the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation's Fellowship Award, Scholar Award, and Clinical Investigator Award.
Pezcoller Foundation-AACR International Award for Cancer Research
The prestigious Pezcoller Foundation-AACR International Award for Cancer Research was established in 1997 to annually recognize a scientist who has made a major scientific discovery in basic cancer research OR who has made significant contributions to translational cancer research who continues to be active in cancer research and has a record of recent, noteworthy publications; and whose ongoing work holds promise for continued substantive contributions to progress in the field of cancer.

The Award consists of an unrestricted grant of 75,000 Euros and a commemorative plaque.

Young Investigator Cancer Awards

Breast Cancer Alliance Masin Young Investigator Award
The term of the Young Investigator Grant is two years. The grant funds salary support and project costs up to a total of $125,000, over two years. Administrative costs must be limited to 8% of grant funds.

The research project must be directly related to the field of breast cancer. Areas of relevant research may be but are not limited to: diagnosis, etiology, immunology, genetics, therapies, prevention and clinical studies.
Cancer Research Institute Investigator Award Program
Established in 1986 to complement our Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, the Investigator Award Program supports accomplished assistant professors undertaking their first independent investigations in cancer immunology or general immunology. A four-year grant, the award provides flexibility and a degree of stability during this very challenging period.

The Investigator Award provides $50,000 per year for 4 years. The funds may be used at the recipient's discretion for salary, technical assistance, supplies, or capital equipment. CRI does not provide funds for indirect costs. Payments are made monthly in U.S. currency to the host institution.

Defunct Cancer Research Awards

If a significant award is not on the above list, I probably haven't gotten around to adding it. However, it could be that it is no longer offered.
  • The AACR and the Warner-Lambert Company (now Pfizer) established the AACR-Bruce F. Cain Memorial Award in 1982 to honor Dr. Bruce F. Cain of New Zealand, whose scientific interests involved the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of potential anticancer drugs. This important award was given to an individual or research team to recognize outstanding preclinical research in the fields of medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, or tumor biology as related to drug discovery that has implications for the improved care of cancer patients; it encompasses anticancer, antiviral, and antifungal agents. The final Award was presented in 2006.
