Well, just as it sounds it's the "one thing" that you can do to move activity in your brain from the irrational midbrain to the logical forebrain, thus eliminating feelings of panic.
You're probably asking yourself, is it really that easy? Just move activity to one part of the brain to another and my panic will just disconnect, shut off, bye-bye.
Yep.
Let me explain a little bit more about the brain in general terms so you'll see.
The midbrain controls the fight or flight response, when activity spikes in this area of the brain you simply cannot stop from feeling panicky no matter what you do.
You know that feeling you get when you're on an airplane, in a business meeting, in a social situation and you start to feel irrational feelings of panic?
Well, that's your midbrain firing on all cyclinders. Crack, boom, bang.
While at the same time your forebrain, the part of your brain that's logical and deliberate is getting less and less activtity.
Know those feelings of unreality? That's where they come from.

But Can Be Treated.
Think of it this way, your midbrain developed to protect you from danger, but your brain has learned a behavoir which makes it fire at the wrong times.

Another way to think about this is if you stopped all activity to the midbrain you simply could not feel any fear. Now, that could be just as dangerous, right? I mean you'd see a poisonous snake and not feel a drop of fear.
