$1 Million in 12 Minutes

In October 2009, the United Way will run its annual CN Tower Climb. While this event normally raises hundred of thousands of dollars to support United Way charities, 2009 will be a landmark year for the event with a $1,000,000 being raised in under 12 minutes.

Being able to climb the 1,776 steps takes some degree of fitness and those in shape can usually complete the climb in under 30 minutes.

Of all the climbers, less than 1% are able to finish in under 12 minutes and to date, no individual has raised over $50,000.

You can sponsor me here.

Leor's Goal

Raise $1,000,000 for the United Way Toronto by climbing the CN Tower in under 12 minutes.

Why am I doing this?

Yes, it's to prove a point, that...

1) A person of average fitness with a little focus can drastically improve their physical performance

2) Anyone can raise $1,000,000 for charity and help their community and the world.

Why $1,000,000?

(and not $100 trillion billion)

Of course, a million dollars will have a huge impact on the Toronto United Way, which in 2007 brought in a total of just over $50 million. But why a $1,000,000?

To quote a US Treasury spokeswoman:

"We just wanted to choose a really large number."

How will I raise $1,000,000?

The CN Tower

The CN Tower, located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a communications and observation tower standing tall. It surpassed the height of the Ostankino Tower while still under construction in 1975, becoming the tallest free-standing structure on land in the world. On September 12, 2007, after holding the record for 31 years, the CN Tower was surpassed in height by the still-under-construction Burj Dubai. It remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Americas, the signature icon of Toronto's skyline, and a symbol of Canada,The CN Tower is Dead. Long Live The CN Tower!, The Torontoist, September 4, 2007. (retrieved on November 17, 2008).CN Tower celebrates 30th birthday, Broadcast News/canada.com, June 26, 2006 attracting more than two million international visitors annually.

CN originally referred to Canadian National, the railway company that built the tower. Following the railway's decision to divest non-core freight railway assets, prior to the company's privatization in 1995 it transferred the tower to the Canada Lands Company, a federal Crown corporation responsible for real estate development. Since local residents wished to retain the name CN Tower, the abbreviation is now said to expand to 'Canadas National Tower rather than the original Canadian National Tower'''; however, neither of these names are commonly used.

In 1995, the CN Tower was declared one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It also belongs to the World Federation of Great Towers.

More information on stair climbing

Stair climbing is the climbing of a flight of stairs. It is often described as a "low-impact" exercise, often for people who have recently started trying to get in shape.

A common exhortation in health pop culture is "Take the stairs, not the elevator".

Once the tallest free standing building...

The total number of stairs from the base to the first pod is 1,776.

Climbing the CN Tower

Sweaty, exhausted climbers

The view while climbing the CN Tower is pretty dull. The stairs are made of metal and the walls are concrete lit with fluorescent lights. Stenciled numbers mark the equivalent floor height. On floor 144, you're at freedom!

How can you help?

Yes, you can be a part of this historic climb

Not to take all the magic out of it, but you're actually helping this fundraiser already but reading this lens. Spread the word by:

In turn, you'll get a to-be-determined shoutout. It will be a worthwhile one!

Of course, you can also pre-pledge (the 2009 pledge site hasn't been launched yet) your donation... to be launched soon.

What will I be doing to prepare?

The hard work - training

Since November 2008, I've been working the step mill to shave off my laggardly long 19-minute climb time, climbing the equivalent of the CN Tower with each workout.

I started by going the maximum rate for 5 minutes and increasing this by 1 minute per workout. Eventually, I will continue at the maximum until I've climbed the entire height of the CN Tower.

Stair climbing workouts will only happen every other week to preserve my knees and once I've maxed out the rate of the step mill, I'll switch to stair climbing in a downtown Toronto condo building.

Also on the agenda for training is participating inthe CN Tower Climb for WWF Canada.

In between the stair climbing workouts, I'll do milder cardio and high-rep weight lifting. I aim to shave off 10 lbs of body fat by climb day.

To get a better idea of how others have been able to accomplish this fete, I'll be interviewing those who have been able to climb the CN Tower in under 12 minutes. If you've done this, make sure you reach out to me!

Climbing in the CN Tower

The stairwell of the CN Tower isn't as exciting as the goal of getting through it.

"I'll be interviewing those who have been able to climb the CN Tower in under 12 minutes. If you've done this, make sure you reach out to me!"

Stumbled on this page looking for info on the April Climb. Not sure what I can really offer, I did the climb in just over 11 minutes last year. It's basically a VO2 burn out, and as such I think any high-intensity aerobic activity will work as training. I didn't actually do any stairs in training, just my ususal biking to work.

    Tips

    1) Line up early to avoid losing time to blockades of people. It's not so bad to get held up 3/4 of the way up when you need to catch your breath anyways, but it's another to have to stop and wait ten seconds after clocking in.

    2) Vary your output... double-step one flight, single-step the next, use the left handrail, then the right handrail, then both (if there is room). Variation slow fatigue... a bit.

Good luck man, see ya at the April climb.

Good God, man, now there's a goal! I admire you enormously, and don't doubt for a second that you will make it!!

This is an excellent lens. Where did you find the counter? That's a great widget and really adds to the drama of the upcoming challenge. In fact, you've created something really exciting here. Well done!
