Cook An Onigiri Rice Ball

Cook an Onigiri Rice Ball with me using my brand new onigiri rice ball molds. I was first introduced to these little balls of wonder while watching the anime Naruto and Inyuasha with my boys.

I googled the recipe and found a number of different ways to make these. I chose just a plain rice recipe with some seaweed flakes.

One thing I enjoy about Rice Balls and Kawaii cooking in general is the little molds that you use in preparing your dishes. They have them for rice, for meat, and for eggs. I used a rice mold for this that I got from a Swagbucks Amazon gift card.

Be sure to check out 'Cooking with Dog' videos as they are hilarious as well as informative when learning about cooking Japanese Style.

This is really fun - Just starting to get into this, myself, so I look forward to trying some of these. Thanks for sharing!

I love these rice ball molds, unfortunately, my children will not eat rice. I guess I have to figure out something else to do with them.

My kids won't eat plain rice but they do like the rice if it has spice and a bit of cheese. If your children don't have allergies to dairy adding cheese might be a way to get them to try it. Also, you don't have to use the mold specifically for rice, try hard boiled eggs or other foods that are moldable.

Very interesting. I think my kids would enjoy making and eating these. Rice balls were one of my younger son's first foods - he loved rice but insisted on feeding himself.

Onigiri was the first bento food I attempted with my girls and it is so much fun to make, -especially when you add those cute nori faces! I am delighted to officially welcome you to the Kawaii Bento Club and to nominate our very first Sunshine Award entry. :D

Thanks - a bit late on my reply though - I haven't experienced the nori faces yet not sure I want to invest in the little punches because really this would all be for me and not my boys. :)

I first use this when making the onigiri for this squidoo lens. It is what you see covered on the rice balls in my introduction photo. I wasn't sure how I was going to like it at first but i am now a fan. Nothing like I thought it would taste like - not fishy at all.

Note: This version is the only one I found that is bonito fish flake free

Ingredients: sesame seeds, seaweed flakes, salt and sugar
