As Technology Advances, Computer Gurus All The Rage

A Truly Rewarding Future!

Like the entire economy, the computer manufacturing industry was hit hard by the recent economic recession. While in the short term this will be distressing for computer hardware engineers, many economic reports are also saying this should be the one field that will turn around faster than any other. Then again, of all the STEM degree (science, technology, engineering, math) professions, becoming a computer hardware engineer has the potential for a truly rewarding future.

Computer hardware engineers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, research, design and oversee the manufacture and installation of computer hardware.  This would also consist of computer boards, chips, and systems, in addition to routers, printers, keyboards and other related peripherals. A good place to start on your career is with a computer science degree

Computers Are Found In Every Economical Level

While some might compare hardware engineers (who may have completed their degree in technology) to electronics engineers, the big difference is the former work only on computers and related machines. This kind of specialization shouldn't hurt the hardware engineer in the long run considering how computers can now be found from the lowest economic levels to the ivory towers of Wall Street and beyond. The work of hardware engineers is similar to electronics engineers, except hardware engineer's work exclusively on computers and computer-related equipment. They have had their hands on anything from giant mainframes to the latest in miniaturized tech, such as the eReader and iPad.

The Bureau indicates growth in the U.S. will be slower than usual, approximately 4% between 2008 and 2018. It states the use of information technology continues to expand rapidly, however, the manufacture of computer hardware will be adversely affected by intense foreign competition. As manufacturers contract out more of their engineering needs to both domestic and foreign design firms, much of the growth in employment of hardware engineers is expected to take place in the computer systems design and related services industry.

Understanding Electronics And Computers Is Key

Those considering an online computer science degree should have a natural inclination for mechanical, electronic and computer science problem solving. As such, a degree, or at least courses, in mechanical and electronic engineering along with computer science is a good idea. Continuing education is a good idea as the industry is constantly changing. Also, going for post-graduate work, such as a Masters or PhD, is smart if one wants to get into the more sophisticated, and better paying, jobs.

That doesn't mean the job doesn't have some very good things going for it. Median salary is just under $100,000. Entry level usually starts at slightly over $61,000. Hardware engineers can surpass $150,000 if they are in the upper ten percent. If that isn't enough, there's also continued education aid for online colleges and retirement programs, life/health insurance, profit sharing and other investment programs.

Financial Aid Available!

If a student needs financial aid, there is many a source besides the standard federal subsidies. Hardware engineering, as a STEM profession, is also accessible for S-STEM funding, as well as ACG and SMART scholarships. A number of professional organizations and private institutions also have their share of aid ranging from undergraduate student to experienced PhD candidate. A good source for more information is to just go to Google and search "Computer Engineering Financial Aid".

So while the hardware engineering field is going through its fair share of change at the moment, the future is as bright as the smart phone in your hand with a STEM degree.  Technology has become an everyday factor in the world in many countries and those who get a degree in science or other STEM area, are the ones keeping themselves current with this growing field.
