Civil Engineers In Growing Demand, Degrees In These Fields A Necessity

The need for water engineers is finally starting to be felt. One need only look at the Gulf Coast oil leak to see where their services could have been employed. It's due to this and other examples of the nation's need for potable water that this new profession has become one of the fastest growing in the U.S.

As it turns out, water engineering covers a number of different arenas. It can concern the construction of new water aqueducts to how tap water is purified. It also covers how we tackle water pollution both effectively and with cost-efficiency. Because "safe" water is becoming a dwindling resource, it's becoming the kind of field for those who not only want to be on the cutting edge of research, but where their contribution could be tremendous. Probably because technology seems to come so naturally to them, new students in this and other cutting-edge fields are getting their degrees through online education.

An Engineering Degree Brings A Lot Of Specialization

The field is a hybrid specialty with strong focuses on civil engineering. It's also exceedingly splintered, due to the number of different problems it tackles. One form of water engineer concentrates on the design and construction of domestic, industrial or wastewater treatment plants, including surge overflow basins, disinfection systems, sludge lagoons and control buildings. This can also include pumping systems and stations, pipelines, sewers and water distribution and storage systems for potable and non-potable water.

They just don't work on mega-structures, either. Water engineers also have a hand in treatment methods for water, waste and pollution disposal, stabilize river banks and repair channel streams. Some design bridges. Others had their hands in the office water cooler. Learning about these skills can be as easy as opening up an internet window in order to find an engineering degree online.

An Online Engineering Degree Gets You Into The Thick Of Things

As in all forms of engineering, anyone who wants to pursue this specialty should start with good grades in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) field in high school. They then should enroll in an online or brick-and-mortar university with a strong curriculum in the civil engineering with minors in other disciplines such as chemical, biological and mechanical. After graduating, they should look for a work-study relationship with firm with a reputation in the field.

At this point water engineers work by day and continue their studies off hours. This is where online education comes in to play. It's not uncommon for such firms to offer some sort of tuition reimbursement for those courses taken and passed. As it stands, water engineers generally have a Masters degree or even a PhD.

As this is a new field, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is still compiling data on this topic. What is known though is the average salary of a water engineer is currently over $72,000 a year with full benefits. The Bureau also projects growth in water engineering will exceed 20% over the next decade, making it much faster than average. What more reason do you need to pursue your online engineering degree?

After all, one only need to see the growing disaster along the Gulf States to see that water engineers will be needed to not only stop the leakage, but figure out a way to clean that area up. If that isn't a gigantic help wanted poster for more water engineers, turn on the hot and cold water in your kitchen sink. Water engineers were needed in both situations.
