Not just anyone can become a makeup artist... you need to have a passion and drive for it. It's hard work, let me tell you! You always have to update your knowledge, stay on top of the ever-changing trends in fashion and beauty, and be willing to invest in a strong makeup kit. With that being said, it's definitely not an impossible dream to achieve.Almost anyone can master makeup application techniques, just as long as you are determined and willing to put in the time to learn and make yourself better. You need to practice good personal hygiene, have solid communication and people skills, and want to LOVE what you do.

You can make a fortune as a makeup artist. The trick is to master the craft, always update your knowledge, try great new products, and take your job seriously. Sure it's glam, and you'll work with tons of cool people, but at the end of the day - it's your job. With this being said, you need to treat your career as a makeup artist with as much focus and seriousness that you would a career as a lawyer or author. Practice makes perfect, and you won't improve if you don't spend some time updating your skills and trying out new things.
A great school will give you the start, and confidence, that you need to begin a lucrative career in the makeup industry. It's up to you, however, to keep it going from there. You should understand that one school isn't going to make you more successful than another, because it's ultimately up to you what you do with your training. A good school will, however, give you stronger tools and more comprehensive training to get you to a point where you can make yourself successful. This includes offering you direction as to what companies you can apply to in order to receive PRO discounts, a database where you can find other professionals in your area, and a student support center that offers its help and assistance to its students even after they graduate.

Training Criteria
What to look for in a school
A wonderful option for those who are on a tight budget, and are already working or need to work through assignments at their own pace, is distance-education. Distance-education is sometimes called correspondence, and involves completing assignments in a home-based learning environment. Newer and more up-to-date schools are offering online learning, so that you have 24/7 access to your learning materials and can access student support through methods such as live chat, telephone, email, and Facebook.
If you decide that distance-education is right for you, make sure that you call and speak to a representative! These people are trained to help you and to answer any questions that you might have. Important questions to ask are:
1) What sort of certification do you offer?
Does the school offer a diploma or certificate upon graduation, so that you may showcase your training to prospective clients? Do they allow you to use their professional designation for life, or will you be charged on an annual basis to maintain your designation? These are all very important things to have figured out before applying to a program. A good school will not charge you for using your professional designation after graduation, as you have earned it! A good school will also provide you with some sort of proof, in written form, that you have graduated from their institution and have completed a particular course. Make sure that it has the school name, course, and your full name on it. Your clients will definitely be interested in seeing it.
2) What can I do after graduation? What are my career options?
The school should have ideas for you, and should know exactly what their training can lead to. If a school is simply training you in random areas, and not providing any guidance as to HOW you can use these skills... that's never good. Look for course material that touches on a variety of makeup industries, such as film & television/photography/catwalk/bridal, so that you have many doors open for you upon graduation!
3) Are you registered with the BBB: Better Business Bureau? What is your standing?
If a school is not registered with the BBB, I would definitely reconsider it. The BBB is an American and Canadian compilation of company names, customer reviews and complaints, and basically provides a history of the company. You can see if they've had an issues with customers, how they were resolved, and see their letter grade standing. An A+ standing is the best you can get... so look for school's with this sort of grade!
4) What sort of support do you offer for your graduates?
If you can never get a hold of a real person and are always forced to use bland online submission forms, this says something about the level of service that you can expect from a school. A great school offers multiple methods of communication and contact, including LiveChat, toll-free telephone numbers, email, and Facebook. QC Makeup Academy offers all of these things!

Professional Designations?
What they are, what they mean.
QC Makeup Academy offers you a professional designation. They're not the first to offer such a thing, but they do something different than other schools. They don't charge you to use it after graduation. That's right, it's totally yours. Most schools charge you an annual fee to keep your professional designation, and that can become quite costly.
