What is the most important ingredient in starting an online business?

Ten years ago, you had to be a real pioneer to venture into the jungle of online careers and marketing. In addition to needing a range of great products to sell, it was all about being a real tech geek - you had to know html, and practically have a degree in Jargonese to make any headway at all. Now, the technical part is almost a snap.

Anyone over the age of 30 knows that working at a job that doesn't excite you is a lackluster way to spend your working life. Anyone under the age of 30 can tell you, they don't intend to spend their working life that way.

Assuming you have the drive and the proper tools - there's no reason why you couldn't blaze your own trail online, based on something that you're genuinely excited about - even in a recession, or a depression.

Like any other profession, an online profession requires preparation and dedication. Simply because working online is done from the comfort of your own home, from your favorite table at Starbucks, or someplace else that's not a cubicle farm, it can't be done sloppily or casually if you expect success. Working from home with no supervision takes as much, or more, discipline and drive than going to a structured office environment does. At home, especially if you have young children, there is always the temptation to walk away from the computer, promising yourself you'll come right back - and no one taps you on the shoulder to get you back on track.

The Internet offers more in the way of technical tools now than ever before, so you don't have to be a html whiz to build as many websites as you like. But many, many people will never make a dime online - and others will earn more in a month than others do in a year. Why is that? What is the big secret that is the key to online success? Why do so many fail and a few succeed?

Passion. Yes, simple Passion! But in this case, that doesn't mean simply that you really, really want to be an online success. If that were all it took, we'd all be millionaires tomorrow, wouldn't we? We're grownups here - we know there's no overnight get-rich-with-no-work scheme. Success requires work.

In this case, Passion means a laser-tight focus. It means that you've done all the necessary homework, and researched or created great products or services. It means that you like them and believe in them because they fill a need, solve a problem, and overdeliver on quality. If you like the products, you will have am emotional interest in them as well as in the size of your bank account. You'll probably hit a few bumps on the roller-coaster ride of an Internet career, so your Passion for your products will help you get past those bumps a lot easier!

Don't be tempted by a "guru's" seeming Passion for what he is selling. The gurus have lots of experience, and they could sell ice cubes to an Eskimo. So, until you are a guru yourself, stick with products, companies or services that genuinely excite you. One of your goals is to become so skilled at selling that you could sell those same ice cubes to those same Eskimos a second time; but as a newbie, start with something that really gets your engine running.

There are plenty of programs out there for you to learn from; some good, some less so. All have "nuggets" that will probably benefit you, if you have the budget to invest in them. There are plenty of free instructional downloads available to start you on your way as well. This avalanche of paid and free information is available with a quick search. You can become an affiliate marketer of companies whose products and results you respect, like I did. Any way you do it, it's an exciting ride, and it can be very well worth the time, effort and Passion you put into it!

The Second Most Important Ingredient Is...

Accountability. Followup. Interest in the cold, hard facts.

Your passion, enthusiasm and get-up-and-go are essential - especially the third item. This will be a bit of a roller-coaster ride, and you need stamina to survive those lows.

So you've got to bring it all together: the excitement, your dreams, your "fun" in working in this new medium - AND, a steely eye and emotionless critical thinking. Take a look at the results you're getting. What tactics are making you money, and which ones aren't? Hard as it may be, there are going to be "pet projects" that are near and dear to your heart which you're going to have to let go. Maybe it's an e-newsletter that you love to write - but it turns out to be mostly a waste of time, as far as your business results are concerned. Be prepared to take the lows with the highs, make cuts where necessary, and be willing always to try new things - and you'll be fine.

A Journey of a Thousand Miles Starts With A Single Step

There's a lot of information out there. Where do you start?

The biggest problem that new and not-so-new online marketers encounter is too much information. Where to start? What should you pick?

Don't Panic. Just make a start. Pick something that interests you. Do a blog. Get to do it every day, or at least once a week. Do some article marketing. Send out email blasts to friends. Get on Twitter and other social marketing sites. When you start getting some results, you'll have an idea what's working and what's not. Just get out of neutral and start something!

Just for fun: Books I recommend

All of these books will have plenty of great content to start you on your online journey. If you get stuck or overwhelmed - just focus in on one thing you need to do. Just do that one thing, check it off your list, and move on to the next. Or go have a latte and take a few deep breaths! Also - look at roadblocks as ways to prove your dedication. Is the roadblock going to win, and keep you from your online success? Find a "workaround," or some other way to defeat that roadblock. Go right up over it, if necessary! It's a challenge to prove your mettle.

If I could have just 5 things

Unlimited time; unending love; a real "teammate" in life; my kids' happiness guaranteed; security. Here's why: Unending time to read everything there is to read, do everything there is to do, and take in all the wonders around us. Unending love so that there's always someone to return home with at the end of the day, and share the wonders of the day with them as we fall asleep. A real teammate to depend on and to help us through the hard times, and to be strong for us when I can't be strong for everyone. My kids' happiness guaranteed - what mother doesn't want that? Security - again, who doesn't want that in these uncertain times.
