Economic Downturn Fueling Need for more Online Pet Adoptions

The state of the economy is driving many people to abandon their pets at an alarming rate. The increase in the supply of animals, coupled with many baby boomers sending their last child out on their own, these " soon to be empty nesters , are turning to online pet adoption services as a way to search for a beloved pet.

These internet sites give you the best way to search for that special pet without driving all over creation until you settle on that special animal that warrants an on site visit.

Buyer Beware: Unfortunately it is also an opportunity for fraud and abuse by undesirables to cheat well intentioned families. In addition, many dealers are selling these animals from breeding facilities called "puppy mills". Buying from puppy mills only perpetuate the horrible conditions these animals endure.

Pilots and Paws

Creatively Trying to Help the Cause

A new story from USA Today - Pilots N Paws discuss the effort by some aircraft pilots who are devoting their time in airlifting pets that are doomed to be euthanized in shelters that cannot sustain the numbers of animals being delivered from area owners.

These good Samaritans transport the lucky ones to other areas of the country to be adopted by families looking for pets.

A very nice story about what can be done with a little compassion and ingenuity.

Shelters Overflow from Bad Economy

This report from Boston.com confirms that many people are dumping their pets due to cutbacks and money saving measures.

The influx is putting resource strains on these shelters and unfortunately will cause many to begin to euthanize animals as try to handle the increase in population.

In attempt to place these animals, many are relying on the internet marketing and other adoption techniques to place these unfortunate bystanders.

One such online pet adoption site is Pet Finder.com who has been successful in placing over 12 million animals since 1995, according to their website.

This site is very simple to use and allows the search to begin by selecting your zip code and particular animal you are interested in. Results of your search include pictures, as well as specific information on the animal. All in all a great way to review various candidates that are local and waiting for your personal inspection.

Grant Program Established

Keep your Pets

As stated previously, families are struggling to keep their pets as they fight to keep their homes from foreclosure.

The American Humane Society has created a grant program to assist families in tough times to help them can keep their pets.

These grants can assist shelters in working with pet owners for food, veterinarian bills and other basic needs to care for their animals. The last thing anyone wants is to leave their pet behind in a foreclosed home or in an already over burdened shelter.

Private individuals can also donate to this fund and provide support to the silent victims who cannot help themselves.

Pets for Seniors

Another Lens I have created (Pets For Seniors) focuses on a segment of the population who enjoy companionship and can really benefit from pet ownership.

Take a look at their story and see the organizations that exist across the country who support them.

Stop Puppy Mills

Many people fail to realize some of their favorite pet stores receive their animals from vendors that are known as puppy mills.

This is a term has been around for decades and describes a vendor who has little regard for the animals and conditions those animals are raised in.

Consumers need to be aware of the inhumane treatment these animals go through prior to the point at which they are end up in the local pet store.

When searching for that special cat or dog, please research the institution you plan to purchase from to ensure their animals come from reputable dealers.

Animal Rescue

When looking for a Specific Breed

Many breeds of cats and dogs have a devout group of families that have intimate knowledge and will house these specific animals until a permanent placement can be found.

These groups are very specific in who they will let adopt these animals to ensure they are going to be well taken care of and loved.

The American Humane Society can refer you to a local breed group by calling the Companion Animals Department at 202-452-1100. The main website is located at American Humane Society.com
