Online Stories for Children

Ranked #451 in Parenting & Kids, #14,693 overall

Reading online can be fun!

Free online stories, animated stories, interactive stories. I will highlight them all in this lens. Reading is now so much more fun with the internet and computer. Of course, we must encourage our children to read. Reading online is just one of the ways to encourage reading. It is a good starting point.

We can supplement the stories a child is familiar with through books as well as online The child will be amazed to see his storybook characters come to life in animated stories. Not just animated as in putting on a dvd and allowing a child to watch passively but rather animated and interactive where the child must do something, point the mouse at a storybook character for example, for the story to progress.

It will build interest in reading is fun and exciting.

Animated Mother's Day Stories for Kids

The Story of the Original Mother's Day from Animated Mother's DayI really like this site called Animated Mother's Day. It is by Kidoons Network. They have a few Mother's Day Stories including The Story of the Original Mother's Day, Old Mother West Wind, Granny Fox and others.

The Story of the Original Mother's Day can also be downloaded and printed out in the Teacher Downloads area. This is very useful as educators whether it is teachers or parents themselves can use it in their lesson plans on Mother's Day. A comprehension page is included with questions and answers on separate pages to test the comprehension of students for this story.

Online Easter Stories For Kids

There are many Online Easter Stories but here are just a few of my favorites. I like these because they are colorful and interactive. These are two very important criteria for catching kids attention when reading online stories.

I don't like stories that have just words on them. I personally do not read those sorts of stories, preferring an old fashioned book instead. An online story for kids MUST be interactive with animations and cartoons. Here are a few Easter Stories which fulfill my criteria for what a kids online story should be like.
The Easter Story - Topmarks
An illustrated story of Easter which includes the arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Moogily's First Easter
Moogily's First Easter Short Read-Along Easter Story for Children
Starfall.com
Rabbit Word Hunt. A very nice interactive story for young kids just learning to read. Kids must pick words hidden in the pictures to complete the story.
Starfall.com
Mr Bunny's Carrot Soup. Not really an Easter story Easter is a good time to read stories about bunnies, rabbits and eggs. :)
Someone's at the Door
A Story about Frogwart and The Easter Eggs
LearningBox.com
The Adventurous Bunny and Easter Island
Meddybemps.com
Edgar's Easter Eggs

“You can teach young children morals by telling them Aesop's Fables.”

Online Moral Stories for Children

Children learn from stories, so one of the ways to teach them morals is through stories with a moral in them. I have been looking for interactive animated moral stories but so far apart from YouTube, there has not been that many.

This site AesopFables.com has an extensive list of Aesop's Fables that you can read to your child. However, it is in plain text. I prefer animated stories to capture the attention of the young child reader.

Here are two animated aesop's fables I found from an unlikely source. Cartoon Soup is an e-card site. They have a section called eCardToons where you can send online fables as cards as a subscriber. However, you can view the moral stories for free online.

Aesop's Fables and Moral Stories Online

Here are two cute animated Aesop's Fables from CartoonSoup.com. This link brings you straight to the story index of the site for more stories. Apart from Aesop's Fables you can find other short animated stories there.

The Ant and the Chrysalis

Your child can use this online story builder to build funny stories for this coming St. Patrick's Day as well as Easter with stories like The Best Easter Ever, Easter Morning, Easter Surprise, Happy Easter.

Comics, Magazines, Or Series?

They are all fine because they all encourage reading.

Children's Book Sets

Enid Blyton, Jeremy Stilton, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series

Kids love collecting series. It is a good way of encouraging kids to read. I am all for series of children's books. However, I do limit my children if they become too demanding or throw a tantrum if they don't get a certain book in a series to add to their collection.

I try to encourage them to read different series from different authors to widen their scope of reading.

Use Children's Digital Libraries for more children's book options to read online

International Children's Digital Library

The International Children's Digital Library

Do you bring your children to libraries? Libraries are wonderful places for children to sit and discover books and the world. Children can look beyond themselves and their surroundings by reading books from all over the world.

Imagine if this library from all over the world can be brought to your home. The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) has done just that. Now your child can read books from all over the world by browsing this International Digital Library for Children. The ICDL has a varied collection of children's books in their online library for kids. It has stories, poems, comics and books in many languages including Arabic, Persian, Slovenian, Spanish, Malay, Chinese, Korean, English, Hebrew and many other languages bringing books to kids from all over the world in their languages.

You can search for award winning children's books, search by country, by author but the most fun way to search for the children's online books is by simple search.

The Open Library

The Open Library is more useful for older kids. Here's how to use the Open Library. Like the ICDL, it is a digital library with books you can read online. However unlike the ICDL where you can easily find chidlren's books to read online, at the Open Library, you'd have to do a search for a term, for example "storybooks" or think of any other term to help you find online stories for your child. Select "only show e-books" to narrow down your search otherwise you will get many results with where to borrow a physical copy of the book.

Here is the search results for the term "storybooks". If you click on that, you will see "read", "borrow" or "daisy". You can read those with "read" immediately. You will need an account to read those listed as "borrow". Others may be Adobe ePub or Kindle books. You will need the specialized ebook reader to read those. As for those listed under "daisy", you will need a special "key" issued by the Library of Congress NLS Program. (National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped). The Daisy books are digital talking books for people who have challenges using regular printed media.
