Become A Game Designer!

When you look at your favorite video game, you are looking at the work of a team of people. They include at least one game designer, some programmers, a team of animators and other technicians and testers. Then there's the guy who thought who the whole thing up. This leader is called the game developer.

At his or her core, a game developer is the leader of game designers and programmers who turn either a licensed property or an original idea into a piece of interactive entertainment you can purchase at your favorite retail outlet. They usually rose up after completing an on-campus or online degree, the same ranks of specialists they now supervise, but have generalized a bit more to further understand whatever else their other employees do as part of the team.

Developers Are Always Looking For Ideas!

A developer's responsibility is not only to supervise his production team. A developer must always be on the lookout for an idea that can be turned into a game, whether it's an original one or from a hot comic book, TV show or sport. From there, they must come up with the basic game theory then supervise the entire process through the platforms the game will be distributed through and even packaging. This level of skill often requires the tools gained through college degree programs.

If anything, creative marketing is becoming a bigger and bigger component of the job. The developer who designs a truly original game is an incredibly valuable asset to his company. That's because instead of having to pay a sports league or entertainment company for the licensing rights to a game, the publisher can now charge everything from movie studios to action figure manufacturers licensing fees for spin-offs.

Always Many Changes In Gaming Industry!

type=textIf that isn't enough, a developer must also keep abreast of innovations in such fields as artificial intelligence, 3D graphics, digitized sound and others. When Apple announced its new iPad or Microsoft announces what it's now calling its "slim" Xbox, the developer also must see how this affects his product.

Because of this lightning fast and constant innovation, the day of the kid creating a hot property in his basement is rapidly becoming folklore. These days publishers prefer their recruits to have at least a bachelor's degree in computer or software science. While programmers can get in with a 2-year degree or vocational certificate, if they want to become developers they will continue their education if they want to be developers. Many institutions are even adding Master programs these days through accredited online universities.

Earning Potential Is Good!

Once your education is complete, either through traditional means or, more commonly these days, though a distance learning degree program, the salary can be considerable. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average developer makes about $100,000. The benefits package usually includes insurance, retirement program, expense account and, most importantly, profit sharing. Developers becoming millionaires are not unheard of.

As it stands, the gaming industry was valued at over $20 million last year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects growth to be exceptional thanks to the constant technological innovation.
