The Popularity of Online Videos

Online videos have begun to dominate online content during this past year's explosion of submissions to sites like YouTube and Google Video. People have moved on from text articles and static photos to satisfy their hunger for a different kind of information consumption - the viral video.

These online video hosts enable any Internet user to post a short streaming video they've created on their site so it can be seen (and shared) by millions of people all over the world. These video sites show all types of videos ranging from the innermost personal thoughts of someone who's feeling lonely to entrepreneurial advice being exchanged among peers.

Smart companies are no longer trying to hard-sell the consumer with hyped up text formats. Instead, they're turning the camera on themselves and building trust and loyalty by letting the consumer get to know them a little bit. The videos that work best hold a viewer's attention all the way through.

They're funny, heart-wrenching, shocking, and even just plain sensible. They get shared via email, bookmarking sites, and through subscribers who sign on to receive future notifications whenever the same individual produces a new video.

The videos drive traffic to other domains, often sending sales of products and services skyrocketing. The videos don't have to stay on the host's site, either. As you'll see in this Squidoo lens, I've showcased several YouTube videos for you right here - and you never have to leave the page to see them!

Word of mouth (or the viral element) plays a very important role with making online videos, so you have to have a combination of skills. You want to enhance your videos by knowing the ins and outs of the video software you're using.

But you also have to have a creative side.

You want it to go viral by infecting the viewer with emotion - whether it's laughter, heartache, or enthusiasm. The video links will get shared in forums, blogs, on websites, and via instant message and email.

Making Your Own Viral Video Production

Want to get noticed in the sea of World Wide Web users? Get your name or brand out there by making your own viral video production that will catch on like an out-of-control wildfire.

You can learn the secrets of online video through one of many tutorials on the internet, but here are some tips to help you get started:

Plan makes [more] perfect - Plan your video and make it interesting - even if your video is about a mundane subject, like how to pick an apple. Find a way to make a boring topic more interesting. You can be silly, scientific, or just informational, but make sure you don't use a monotone voice - inject some personality into it.

Eliminate any background noise when making the video, unless the noise is an important part of the plot. Extra noises that don't have anything to do with the video will only be distracting to the viewer. You can't grab their attention if they're distracted by something else.

Style over substance? - Shoot your video as if it were a reality show that you see on TV. People love to see clips of reality that aren't scripted. You can write a little script for your video, but make sure that when you create it, the viewer won't know it's scripted. Make them think it was spur of the moment action.

Buzz buzz buzzzz - When your video is done and you're ready to release it to the world, make sure you help generate a buzz for it. Put it on every video directory on the web (look at the link list on this page to find plenty of resources). Share it on your blog by embedding it right in a daily post.

Encourage visitors to link to it, post it on their blogs or email it to their friends. Get your viral video released into the population and relish the instant Internet fame that comes your way.

Trends in the Viral Video World

What do they all have in common? They were made by online video enthusiasts who captured the attention of the world's population with their creations, now housed in the YouTube Most Viewed Archives

The world of viral video has taken on more trends than the Internet has ever seen before. With the presidential campaign looming near, viral videos are giving the presidential candidates more exposure to the American people.

It's interesting to note that none of the actual candidates are involved in the viral video campaigns. The videos are produced to provide humor to an otherwise conservative presidential debate - regardless of which political party is taking the podium.

Today it's not Rudy versus Obama - it's Rudy's Girl responding to the Obama Girl in a singing battle of flesh-baring pop tarts declaring their love for the candidates. They're actually spoof music videos, but they spread throughout the internet and the sad part is, although no poll has been officially taken, it's probable that more people know the Obama Girl than they do the candidate himself!

These videos seem silly to some of the public, but when you look at the numbers, they have over 2.3 million hits - and those numbers are still rising. The videos will remain popular as long as the candidates are still running, but after the election is over, there will be another trend on the rise.

The guy who gives out free hugs was invited to be on the Oprah show due to his online video antics. LonelyGirl15, at first thought to be a real teenage girl in angst, wound up being one of the year's most-watched soaps of all time (it just happened to be on the internet)!
