The best wines are more expensive.

While there is some truth to this, at the end of the day the only person who should judge how good a wine is, is the person drinking it. If your favourite bottle of wine only costs £6, who cares?! In fact, many people expect so much from a really expensive bottle of wine that they are left feeling disappointed if it doesn't appeal to their palate.

Whites should be chilled, reds should be room temperature.

The term 'room temperature' was coined when rooms were a lot colder so today leaving your bottle of red in your centrally heated kitchen might not be the best thing for it. In addition, a chilled red can be very refreshing especially in the summer.

Whites are generally served cooler but that doesn't mean that they need to be chilled within an inch of their life. Some whites are nicer when put in the fridge just half an hour before serving.

Wines get better with age

While this is true for premium, high quality wines, it is not the case for every day drinking wines. Whites should be consumed within three years of production and reds within one to two years.
