Online Dictionaries : Grammar Rules : Homeschooling English : Punctuation for Article Writing

Here are some online sites that offer helpful information especially for writers and students researching the basics for homework help such as English papers. Find some Christmas gifts for teachers, editors, writers, students and more!

Are you writing or thinking of starting to write a blog or a series of articles? Maybe you're a member of a creative writing group. In English-speaking countries, editors are looking for people who have good skills in English. Teacher Appreciation Day is May 8th, 2012.

You're more apt to attain your goals, and do so quickly if you have the ability to communicate well. The resources here can help you do so. There are articles online that are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. People will stop reading them by the second, third and sometimes at the first error they see. Computer spell check programs do not catch everything.

My hope is that the information on these sites will spark an interest in someone to learn more on the subjects. Maybe you're working on a new resume or a business report and you've forgotten some rule in English grammar.

I have visited all of the web sites below but am not affiliated with any of them. Some are run by government, educational or private organizations. Some are maintained by individuals. I think that they are useful tools to acquire basic information and offer basic English Lit help.

This is a map of the wheel-ruts of modern English. Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2,000 years ago. The dates beside a word indicate the earliest year for which there is a surviving written record of that word (in English, unless otherwise indicated). This should be taken as approximate, especially before about 1700, since a word may have been used in conversation for hundreds of years before it turns up in a manuscript that has had the good fortune to survive the centuries.

It's a Big Old Goofy World MP3 : Similes : Examples of Similes

John Prine's Song of Similes

Excerpt from the lyrics:

Up in the morning
Work like a dog
Is better than sitting
Like a bump on a log
Mind all your manners
Be quiet as a mouse
Some day you'll own a home
That's as big as a house

I know a fella
He eats like a horse
Knocks his old balls
Round the old golf course
You oughta see his wife
She's a cute little dish
She smokes like a chimney
And drinks like a fish

There's a big old goofy man
Dancing with a big old goofy girl
Ooh baby
It's a big old goofy world
