Tips for Getting Straight A's From Teachers and Family

Furthering your education, doesn't mean you have to neglect your family. Using a few simple strategies, you improve your life with a better education, and stronger family bonds.

You've reached the point in your career, where you need a change. That change however, will not come about with your current level of education. So, you make the decision to go back to school. Going back to school either full time, or part time, will be difficult. It will put enormous strains on your time and possibly your finances. If you have a family, then whatever decision you make will have an influence on them as well. Taking time away from your spouse and children can be difficult, and stir up strong feelings of guilt. There are some strategies you can employ to mitigate these concerns and keep everyone happy. One of the best is to further your studies through an online education.

Pursuing an online education is a great way to further your education in a more time efficient manner. It eliminates the travel time to and from school, and allows you to study at home near your family. Online education studying may sound great at first, but there are rules needed to make it work. Your spouse and children need to follow these rules, as do you. When your studying, and it's critical not to be interrupted, close the door to your study area. When your doing light studying that can tolerate interruption, keep the door open. Family members will soon understand, when it's OK to interact with you, and when it's not. You will be less isolated from the family, when you can at least see and hear each other.

Everyone needs a break from school work, now and then. Try to spend those breaks with family members. It doesn't matter, if it's a ten minute break, or an hour break. Ten minutes helping your two year old build a Lego tower, or an intimate dinner with your spouse will serve to strengthen those family ties. You'll feel more energized and refreshed returning to study, knowing you've had some quality time with the family.

Set boundaries for online education time, and family time. Getting an online education allows you more flexibility in setting those boundaries. You could set aside an entire day of the week, for only family time. This can be a bit of a challenge if everyone already has busy schedules. If you can't pick a whole day, then go for a couple of week day evenings. Even half of a Saturday or Sunday would be a good start. What's important, is that everyone knows that during those times, you'll be together. Try and pick something fun that everyone enjoys, so the whole family looks forward to it.

Become more efficient with your studying time. If you've never consciously employed a time management technique in the past, this would be a good time to start. There are dozens of different approaches available. One rather popular one is called "Getting Things Done" by David Allen. One of the things he suggests, is to always carry around a small notebook and pen with you wherever you go. When study ideas or tasks occur to you in the middle of a family activity, you can quickly jot them down to deal with later. This frees your mind from clutter, and allows you to go back to enjoying the family.

Sometimes family time can mean just sharing each others company without interruption or conversation. You can study, and spend quiet time together by making place in your study area for guests. Simply having a comfortable chair for someone else to lounge, read, or nap in can allow you to be together. A play area with a few quiet toys in the corner of your office will allow your younger children to be near you, while studying.

Conversely, if you can do your homework in the other living areas of the house, then you should try it. Laptops make work very portable these days, even if it's just up a flight of stairs. Try and save your non-quiet study type of work for these areas of the house.

Make a point every day, of spending some time involved in your families life. Even if it's just a half an hour here and there. Most family have many activities going on, and a distraction from your primary studies can be a good thing. It's often too easy to spend all your time studying, when your office is only a few steps away. Dealing with non-student issues, will allow your subconscious to work on student stuff, while you have some family time.

Try to make your family members part of your new student life. Solicit help, and suggestions from them concerning your online education studies and problems. You may be surprised at the good ideas that can come from a different perspective. It will also make them aware of the kind of studying your doing, and the commitment required. This way, they wont just view your studying as an evil time-sink that takes you away from them.

Getting a better education is good for you, and your family in the long run. The trick, is to manage the short term time conflicts that will inevitably arise. Using just a few of the above mentioned techniques in a proactive manner can make the experience better for all. You may be surprised to see how much you can get done in one day, and still build those all important family bonds.

Online Career Education Discussion Forum

Here's the place to meet, greet, and talk to other students enrolled or considering an online education.

Getting an education online can be a bit isolating when compared to the more traditional student experience of being on campus. Fortunately, with so many online students these days, there's no reason to feel that way. Feel free to share stories, comments, and even ask questions related to being an online student. I don't have all the answers, but I do know where to look . . . online of course !
