The First Anti-Coloring Book: Creative Activities for Ages 6 and Up (Anti-Coloring Book)

Reviewer: A reader
As a parent and former early childhood educator, I am pleased to write this review. In a day and age when entertainment does not require much thought process from our young ones (i.e. video games, pointless television shows, computer software, etc.), it is very refreshing to stumble upon the Anti-Coloring Book. Our children are exposed to endless amounts of effort-free fun stuff; and ultimately, young minds become lazy, trained, and forgetful of the power of imagination. How can you say no to a product that fosters developmentally appropriate learning, and promotes self awareness, self confidence, self expression, and independent thinking?? Help your child to break free from the lines and boundaries that hold them back. Kudos to the creators... it's time to get real about our children's needs!

The Rest

Reviewer: annebooks "annebooks"
These books are great for allowing children to be creative. Each page presents an idea for the child to expand upon by drawing and coloring her own picture. There are no lines provided to be colored in. Each book in the series provides new pages and ideas for imaginative drawing, and the pictures created depend upon the child's imagination. I gave these books to a 7 and an 8 year old who absolutely love them. (Their parents liked them, too!) Older children would be able to expand upon the same ideas and create even more detailed pictures.

Most young children naturally delight in art. They love the process of applying paint to paper, gluing things together, and pounding a lump of clay. Working with art materials offers children opportunities to experiment with color, shape, texture and design. As they engage in art activities, children develop an awareness and an appreciation of pleasant sensory experiences -- which is the beginning of aesthetic development.

"The relationship between high self-esteem and unfettered creativity is extremely strong. By its very nature, creativity is a deviant act. It says, `I see things my way and I am willing to let you into my private, perceptual world.'... Studies show that the freely creative youngster is high in self-confidence, emotional maturity, calmness, and independence. He has the capacity for sustained concentration and involved absorption in his projects. Education must concern itself with children's emotions and self attitude or it does not deal with the whole child. It is only as a child's total uniqueness is respected that he can permit his individuality to unfold."

Through their art, children express how they feel, think, and view the world. Art is an outlet that allows children to convey what they may not be able to say with words. Involvement with a rich variety of art materials instills confidence and pride.

Ten Cardinal Rules for Teaching Creative Art

1. Obliterate your own expectations of how an art project should be completed, and let the child's imagination decide how the art materials will be used.
2. Never draw, paint or write on a child's art work.
3. Never point out accidental similarites to realistic objects.
4. Never show a child "how" to draw or entertain a child by making realistic pictures.
5. Don't ask "What is it?" or "What are you making?" "What" it is is not as important as "How" it is being made.
6. Never give a child coloring books, dot to dot, magic paint with water, molds, drawing machines,s drawing computers or similar anti-art toys.
7. Never encourage children to participate in art contests or other forms of competition that pit child against child.
8. Encourage a child to come up with many different solutions to problems, rather than only one correct answer.
9. Don't scold for drawing on unacceptable surfaces. Offer paper and say, "Oh good, I see you feel like drawing."
10. Do not rush a child to the next level of development.
