Learn English Online

How to Learn English Online When my father was young he had a younger cousin who only he could understand. For months he translated for the rest of the family. She WAS speaking English - trouble was, not everyone could understand. It's often the case with heavily accented foreigners - they're speaking a form of English, but are getting frustrated at not being understood. Have you ever looked at books of the paintings of Old Masters - Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Leonardo? Some great pictures - subtlety of execution, great use of colour, light, technique. Something for everyone! But have you ever seen the real thing - been to the National Gallery, the Rijksmuseum, and the Louvre? The real thing is just SO much better, isn't it? Ever seen pictures of the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and the Pyramids?

Magnificent, awesome, fantastic - BIG? But have you ever seen the real thing - no comparison, or so I am assured by those that have visited these places! You can learn English on-line: there are thousands of resources out there. You can learn to decline verbs, you can see phonetically how to pronounce the words, and you can listen to down-loaded lessons. You can pick up vocabulary, and there are templates for all sorts of letters, mails and faxes. But, you know what? There is no substitute for the real thing - speaking it and listening to it in its natural environment (the mouth of a native speaker!). So when you're tempted to learn English (or any other language) on-line, or by tape: don't neglect the necessity to practice as you progress!

Learn Business English

I want to learn Business English First, let's consider what exactly you mean by that? We go through life making assumptions, don't we - what do you assume 'Business English' means? Is it somehow different to Recreational or Social or Conversational or Vacation English? Is it really specific? Is English for an Automotive Executive different to that needed by a Banker or a Scientist? Does 'Business English' merely separate one type of student from another, perhaps? Second, let me make an assumption now: Business English is just the same as any other English, but with a little jargon, some fairly specific vocabulary, and a more mature student! You want to learn Business English.

So you need to be able to hold a conversation with a variety of people around the world of business, from Customer to Supplier and everyone servicing your global industry. I would suggest that this includes: Taxi drivers; Airport and Hotel staff; as well as the people in shops and banks and at the end of a telephone that you might have to deal with in the normal course of business, both in the office and on a trip. Business English teaching could be about a specific meeting or document or project, or it could be about a general comfort level in the day-to-day use of English. There are a number of ways of learning business English, from one-on-one intensive study to classroom studies at a college or organised in the workplace.

There's also the opportunity to use modern technology and arrange lessons with a qualified teacher via video conferencing. You want to learn, or someone in your organisation needs to learn? Study the options and offers and make a choice that suits the individual concerned: not everyone needs expensive intensive training; not everyone responds well to classroom teaching; but everyone involved in the International business community needs English!

Learning To Speak English

When you speak in your native language, you don't have to think about the grammar or the words you use. Correct sentences seem to just come to you. Your brain uses sentences you've already seen or heard. If you want to learn to speak the English language fluently, you have to learn it the way you learned your native language, by reading and listening.

Reading and listening to the English language will help you develop English language intuition. Learning the English language is all about putting lots of proper sentences in your head. Your brain can then imitate them and produce similar English language sentences to express the meaning you want. When you read and listen to the English language a lot, paying close attention to useful English vocabulary, you will soon start to use new English language words and phrases in your speaking and writing. Not only that, but you will develop English language intuition. You will start to feel what sounds good and what sounds incorrect in the English language, just as you do in your native language.

To get a good feeling for the use of articles in the English language you need to read lots of sentences and analyze them closely. It seems like it would be easier to read a unit on English language articles in a grammar book, but it takes lots of time to build a sentence when you have to think of all of the English language grammar rules. When you talk to someone, you don't have time to do that. The input-based approach may seem to be more demanding, but it's the only way to achieve fluency.

If you have ever attended English language classes, you have probably been asked to read a text and then complete a task connected with it. Most teachers encourage students to read very quickly, just to get the main points out of the English language text. You might think that this way you will improve your English, but it's the other way around. Reading in such a way isn't very useful; it could even slow down your progress!

When you read in your native language, you read for content. Your brain focuses on key words that convey the meaning of the text. This way you are able to read faster. But this is the wrong thing to do when reading in the English language. You want to concentrate on the grammar, too. You should analyze the sentences closely. When reading content in the English language, try to notice interesting things in every sentence you read. It could be a useful phrase or an expression that you could have written wrongly. In this way you can learn how to use the English language more correctly, faster.
