There is no free music on the internet!

The above is a common myth. And yet almost true. Music downloads on the internet is usually bundled with all your favorite viruses and nastys that no one really wants. There is a few good paid sites out there (Most notably napster) and also a few sites to get a quick download or two. Hopefully i can shed some light on this myth and help you along your path to be jamming to your favorite music in no time.

Peer to Peer

Watch Out!

Peer to peer (P2P) is basically the act of sharing music with others. So that the music is never actually hosted on the internet, rather that you are downloading straight from someone elses computer. There is a few programs out there for this most notably being limewire which is quite popular among teenagers. However it can pose obvious risks. The most notable being that because you are downloading from someone elses computer, they could put pretty much ANYTHING and name it a song. You do not know what you are downloading till you get it.

For this reason im going to leave out going into depth about P2P file sharing. As it is not a method that i particularly like or use.

Open FTP

Same as per above, but easier

Open FTP servers are another way that you can gain pretty much any MP3 that you desire in a matter of minutes. FTP servers are merely file servers that are left password-less on the web. So that any old man and his dog can walk in and take a look at the files stored there (In this case music files). There is a google trick to view a few MP3 FTP files (Google "google open ftp mp3"). And a few sites that do this for you ( Searched MP3 etc). But the downside to this method is that you cant always find what you want, and you most certainly will only be finding the big names in music.

If you are after smaller bands or older bands this most definitely wont work for you. And you will only get garbage results. Much like above there is a risk that what you are downloading is not what it is listed as. But hell, its free right?

Paid sites

Well, maybe the best things in life arent free

I know i know, here you were thinking that you could get limitless MP3 downloads for nothing. Well.... Sometimes it just cant always end up like that. If you really (And i mean REALLY) want limitless downloads then you will have to pay for it. But never fear, i have the best site for you. And its name? Napster. Napster used to be a free service but has since turned paid. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as they have a MASSIVE selection of songs. And to make it better you can Get a 7 day free trial with them

Im not sure about you but you may aswell take the 7 day trial and see how much you can download ;) Cant hurt :)

Decisions, decisions?

Which method?

So youve probably read this and gone.... well.... Where is my MP3's? The two methods ive used is the Open FTP method, and then i got a napster subscription which i now use all the time. But it is up to you which one you want to do. It really comes down to how bad you want that MP3. If you are content searching for a while then use the Open FTP method. But if you want that song the minute you think about it. Get Napster! And like i say Take a free TRIAL! and then you cant go wrong.
