Over the past few months, I've heard quite a bit about a new ecommerce site called Bonanzle, so I finally took a look at it. I was surprised to find a fresh looking, easy to use site, that has a sense of community and reminds me a lot of the early days of eBay.

Seattle Startup Bonanzle Takes on eBay

In June of 2008, Seattle programmer Bill Harding launched an online marketplace called Bonanzle. The site, a completely grassroots effort with zero VC or angel funding, is in many ways the anti-eBay. Instead of focusing solely on the goods being sold, Bonanzle is attempting to build a marketplace where the people are relevant, too. On Bonanzle, buyers can chat with sellers in real-time or over instant messaging, an experience that delivers a more social experience to the online shopping process. These interactions have allowed Bonanzle to build a strong community, but will that be enough to take on eBay?

The first Saturday morning of each month, licensed auctioneer Walt Kolenda holds live auctions on the Web. Buyers usually show up early to inspect the goods and ask "Auction Wally" questions through a live chat window. From the comfort of his home in Barre, Mass., Kolenda calls the action over a real-time podcast, taking bidders, offering bundle deals, and calling attention to the rarity of a set of antique postcards or the craftsmanship of a piece of ornate glassware.

Bonanzle (pronounced Bon-an-zle), a start up out of Kirkland Washington, is positioning itself as a viable option to eBay and Craigslist. Bonanzle launched on June 1st, 2008 and is actively recruiting sellers and buyers with grass roots efforts and social media marketing. In less than a month of operations Bonanzle claims an item count of 72,000 and over 2000 registered users (September 16th, 2008).

eBay has really taken a lot of flak the past year or so. You keep hearing that they've gone commercial, and that it isn't about the user experience anymore. If you do go on eBay, you'll find that most of these claims are quite true. Most of your top results are all power users, with mostly using the Buy Now option.

There are other sites out there that you can focus on if you want to try and get out of the shadow of the eBay elite. One site is called Bonanzle. In my short experience utilizing Bonanzle I've come away quite impressed. First, Bonanzle is a site based around 'community'. So, if you're a person who likes to build relationships online, and not just power sell then you'll find quite a bit to like about Bonanzle.
