Develop an Online Selling Plan to Support your Strategy

There are a number of steps that will need to be planned before you are ready to sell online.  Take the time to address all of these.  Do the best to begin to implement the best ideas and start practicing what you learn.

Initially, you need to set some goals for your business. This will be the beginning for your business strategy. Marketing is only one piece of a business strategy.

Below we will review different steps that can be taken to prepare yourself for a smooth running selling environment. No plan is perfect, but trust me if you can minimize the potential problems early, by having a process in place, you will be able to increase your sales much quicker by having these steps worked out in the early stages of your business. What happens without the plan is you will reach a peak in sales that you cannot get passed because you get to busy with all the day to day responsibilities.

Developing the Marketing Plan

Determine where you want to sell and how.

This is one of the greatest challenges. If you spend all of your time developing your business to sell products in one place you might make a grave mistake. It is important to research the different selling options you have. You might want to sell on ebay but you hear some of the challenges that people face either with rules or with security or even something else.. On the other hand, it is probably one of the easier places to get started.

In addition to where you want to sell, you are also going to have to consider all the ways people will find what you are selling. If you are on ebay, it is really fairly easy as long as you use a good title on your item. Not only will people be able to find you using search on ebay, but you also might get picked up by the search engines. The fixed price items will get picked up better than auction items.

Other sites may not provide the same traffic that ebay provides and even though the cost of listing may be lower, there may be work needed on your part to get traffic to the site or find out how the site generates traffic. Amazon, for example, seems to get good search engine placement and feeds their data to Kaboodle and BizRate.

Below are links to lenses that have more detailed information on specific tactics in executing an online marketing plan.

Determine what you want to sell

There are a couple of ways to explore which products to sell. You can go with something you are familiar with like something you use in a hobby or something you have the ability to get at a price low enough you can sell it for a profit.

Either way, you will need to develop some research techniques to determine if there is an opportunity for the item or category selected.

Here are a list of places to learn more about finding items.

In addition to the links below, you can find ways of purchasing products at a discount by doing the research. For example, you might be into crafts. You can go to a retail store and look at the package and find out where the manufacturer is located and contact the manufacturer. You would then contact the supplier and see what the minimum requirements would be to open an account. Usually there is a minimum opening order amount and then there is also a minimum for repeat orders. In addition to order minimum's,
there may also be a minimum count requirement sometimes known as a carton. If after contacting the manufacturer, you feel unsuccessful, do not be discouraged. There are sometimes distributors from which you can buy from that offer decent prices as well. You need to do the math though. You have to see what the total cost of purchasing the product will be and compare it to what you think you can sell it for. Then you would have to subtract your estimated costs of sales which would include your listing fees and any fees associated with the collection of money.

Design your buying experience

This is one of the most critical components of your business. You need to be continually investing time into this and try and figure out what is the most important. I found that I would spend more time in the areas where problems would come up. If we had errors on picking orders, we would spend time fixing the bin labels (making sure they were clear) or training employees. If we had a return because the picture did not clearly represent the product, we would change the image. We spent a lot of time in the beginning of the business on the process. This was mostly developing the product database which includes the images, titles and descriptions. Then we spent a lot of time on developing how customer service worked. This all has to do with customer acquisition.

Get your item ready for sale online

There are a number of steps involved in getting an item ready to sell online. These include:

1) Photograph
2) Item Title
3) Item Description
4) Item Price
5) Shipping
6) Related Items - These might be either upsells or accessories.

Customer Service

This is where you plan the part of your buyer experience

Think about something you have bought online and determine the steps you took to feel comfortable making a purchase decision. Buyers who come to purchase something from you are going to think the same way or may even be more critical.

Design Your Working Environment

You will need to figure out how to organize yourself so things run smoothly. If you start your business out slow and think about this with every single step you take and what could be done better, more efficient ways of doing things will come out. As you pack an order, there are specific steps you take to pack the order. You might line up the things you use to pack the order in the same sequence as you take when packing the order.
