Offline vs. Online Social Networking

Offline networking has roots in ancient times. The Talmud reports that Jewish carftsman in Alexandria, Egypt would circulate among employers meeting in the great synagogue to find business and work for which they were qualified.

In modern times chambers of commerce and breakfast networking groups have served a similar purpose. Armed with business cards and brochures entrepreneurs network before and after hours to find new clients for their products and services.

Since the advent of online social networking savvy business people are able to network day or night using their computers and make new contacts and generate more business. They use social networking sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook which support networking and information sharing.

Online Social Networking

Social Networking Sites and Social Media Marketing Training

My first online social networking experience was at Ryze which I joined December 2003.

I met some wonderful people at Ryze, but I found their policies too restrictive, especially their network marketing prohibition.

In 2005 I became a member of LinkedIn. As of this writing I have 2,160 direct LinkedIn connections linking me to more than nine million members. This is my main interface with corporate headhunters.

Later the same year I joined Direct Matches and have since remained an active Executive member. Direct Matches is where I met the majority of my business contacts since 2006. In my autoresponder I have several hundred subscribers who joined my list from Direct Matches, and a much smaller number who joined from Yuwie.

In 2006 I started networking at MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites, and while I have met some great people there, I much prefer Direct Matches and Yuwie.

In 2006 I also began teaching people how to network online and offline through tele-seminars many of which are archived as podcasts at my Social Networking Project site. Be sure to listen to the recorded call about belief and the one about thinking outside the box.

Gradually I became interested in other social media such as blogging, social bookmarking, video marketing and news sites. You can browse a partial resource list from the sidebar of my social networking blog. You'll also find dozens of thought provoking articles there on social media and personal development -- and a new series, Blog Marketing and Seo Training.

Earlier this year I affiliated myself with a social media marketing training group called My Private Classroom. My new colleagues specialize in video marketing and like me they're keeping their finger on the pulse of technology, especially mobile communications.

About brauner

I'm Larry Brauner. I live with my family in the Lower Hudson Valley about 35 miles northwest of New York City.

Since 2005 I have been a business analyst at a major telecom. I develop and implement customer acquisition, retention and lifetime value models, as well as key performance indicators.

From 2001 to 2004 I was a recruiting and marketing consultant for Excel Communications.

From 1978 to 2001 I held a variety of positions at Eric Marder Associates, a preeminent marketing research firm serving Fortune 500 companies. I computerized the business and refined many research and operational processes.

I collaborated with Eric Marder on The Laws of Choice, a groundbreaking treatise on marketing research and choice behavior. Mr. Marder wrote in his acknowledgments that I "did the computer work, consolidating studies and generating new analyses as required. He was my severest critic. I felt confident that if I could persuade Larry of something, I would be able to persuade just about anyone else. His contribution was invaluable."

My business interests include books and self-study, customer analysis, marketing, online social networking, personal development, recruiting, search engine marketing, social media marketing, social networking sites, training and web analytics.

My non-professional accomplishments include: completed high school math at 15 and began my computer studies, Nationally Ranked #16 United States Junior Chess Player (1971), top U.S. player and teacher of the oriental Go game (1976-1981), New York City Marathon finisher (1984 & 1985). I also achieved a basic level of proficiency in cello and the ancient Talmud -- undertaking both as an adult.
