At every level of teaching online, schools seek candidates who are familiar with the internet and content management systems such as Blackboard. Prior experience with teaching online and instructional design is highly desirable.

Online teaching is definitely something that has become much more widely accepted and used throughout the last several years. Colleges like http://www.luonline.com and other various online schools use a variety of methods to achieve the best results possible.
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Oct 25, 2010 @ 2:17 pm | delete
Penellan, you are right, online learning is an accepted way to earn a degree from excellent universities. You mention Liberty University online learning. I earned my Masters in Counseling from Liberty University and have a special place in my heart for their early distance program that made it possible for me to complete the degree while raising my twins and working. Online learning took distance ed to new levels that opens doors for working adults.
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Nov 29, 2010 @ 8:52 am | delete
Be persistent in applying to several schools. I recommend starting with local schools to get experience. The best paying online teaching jobs go to instructors with online teaching experience.
  • Chloe Oct 17, 2010 @ 12:04 pm | delete
    2 questions.
    A) I have been looking around and it seems many online jobs require you to attend committee meetings or on-campus training programs. Is this standard procedure, or are there legitimate jobs which require no travel?
    B) As far as credentials go, will a degree in online teaching coupled with a PhD in your area of expertise suffice, or is in-class teaching experience generally a strict prerequisite?
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Oct 18, 2010 @ 10:10 am | delete
    Good questions, Chole.
    a) If you live within reasonable distance to the university, I would ask for a face-to-face interview. You get to know them and make a positive impression. Otherwise, adjunct interviews are usually conducted by SKYPE or phone. Full time faculty appointments are more likely to require face-to-face interview however a quality university needs to pick up the travel expenses for this.
As for Committees - - - I am on two committees at my university. I participate with the on campus committees by SKYPE or Blackboard from my home office. Our online faculty also conducts bimonthly meetings by SKYPE.
If travel is required, then the school needs to pay.
    b) What matters is that you have an appropriate advanced degree in your field. My first online teaching job with a local campus required experience and evaluation of my teaching on-campus before applying to teach online.
We learn how to teach online with training from our school's IT department and practice. Don't fall for some quickie so-called degree in Online Teaching, it's probably a scam. I do suggest teaching on-campus first to get the flow of undergraduate or graduate level teaching.
  • Kim Sep 22, 2010 @ 2:43 pm | delete
Does anyone know of any full-time online professor positions for BA, MA or PhD psych programs? I currently teach face-to-face and online courses at a community college, but just had a baby. I would like to teach online full-time if possible. I have a PhD in psychology and have had 8 years of experience teaching at CC. Thank you!
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Oct 1, 2010 @ 9:33 am | delete
Kim, review the suggestions in this lens for finding online teaching jobs. Start with schools you attended or where you have contacts. For a broader look, consider schools with large online programs such as University of Phoenix or Capella. Many schools that are CACREP at Masters level or APA at Doctoral level have additional faculty expectations beyond the degree. Many clinical programs also want doctoral faculty who are licensed in the profession. Put your PhD research skills to work on this job search to find the right match.

This is a very comprehensive lense. I have just graduated with my Master of Distance Education (Canada, Athabasca University) a very excellent program and internationally accredited university. I have taught at several colleges online, but now ironically, am having trouble finding work teaching online. Some U.S. schools don't hire international applicants. The field has gotten competetive in Canada and the schools would prefer their staff teach online (many don't want to) rather than hire someone outside.
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Jan 27, 2010 @ 12:12 am | delete
Thank you! How ironic that you have a degree in distance education yet are less marketable because the degree is not from a U.S. university. The reluctance is usually on two fronts: fear of stepping outside accreditation rules and extra time to review an international transcript. Ask your University to give you a letter indicating that your degree is "substantially equivalent" to that of a similar program in U.S. Those are the magic words: "substantially equivalent".
Have you searched for online teaching jobs in Australia, New Zealand or UK? Do you find those other English speaking countries to have any more acceptance of degree from Canadian university?
  • Rhonda_M85 Feb 1, 2010 @ 6:35 pm | delete
Dr KT, thanks for that advice. I think it's not just the credential from another country, but some kind of Canada/Us immigration issue. I have found that (you have mentioned it from the teacher's perspective) that schools prefer to hire closer to home first before going further afield. Athabasca University, for example has some kind of Union rule that they must hire from Alberta (where the university is) first. The British and English speaking commonwealth is certainly possible, although I suspect the "hiring closer to home" policy may be in effect too. My specialty is also English/Writing/Communications. So I think it has something to do with what you teach as well. There are so many of us out there DE/no DE degree who teach English. I am also looking at trying to sell myself as a designer/instructor teach the course I design since I also know how to do that.
    Cheers, Profrhonda
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Feb 1, 2010 @ 9:01 pm | delete
Rhonda, I did not know that the "hire local" approach extended to Canada as well. With your specialty, consider other ways to teach online such as tutoring for college or graduate students in composition, APA format and thesis preparation. A colleague is making a successful sideline by tutoring graduate students on writing and research. If you have a web site (don't spend serious money, keep it simple) or add a site here on Squidoo, you can give writing tips for students. Then as you develop a following, offer a webinar or paid hourly tutoring. Use Paypal for prepayment before the consultation. There is more than one way to find online teaching jobs - - make your own job!

    on online teaching.
    ThanK you for great advise!

I want to share one article on how to find online teaching job:

    http://www.firehow.com/201001077502/how-to-find-online-teaching-jobs.html
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Jan 10, 2010 @ 3:41 pm | delete
Hanna, I appreciate your effort to add an article link. However, the article is filled with grammar errors. If the article writer cannot present proper English, then nothing else suggested is worth reading. Whether poor grammar or lack of editing, a credible university expects more from online teachers.
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Oct 15, 2009 @ 12:08 pm | delete
Thanks for that link, Dean. That is a credible site for online teaching jobs. I still recommend starting with schools close to home where you could make an in-person contact or with your centers of influence (alumni, business connection). That is the way I have secured all of my online teaching jobs.

Hi Deborah. I attended Walden University and earned my MBA online. I have a passion for teaching and soon plan to apply for online teaching jobs. A friend of mine shared this link that I think you will find useful in looking for online teaching opportunities. http://www.higheredjobs.com. Enjoy and best of luck
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Oct 9, 2009 @ 10:57 am | in reply to Deborah Lynn | delete
Deborah, as described in this lens, start local and move forward. Connect with local colleges/universities, next with those you know (i.e. attended) and then with others in your field. For tutoring, contact the major names in the field (some mentioned above) about online tutoring. I highly recommend Dr Dani Babb's excellent book which is offered in this lens. I learned much from it. Also ask faculty in your discipline what and who they know at other schools. Networking is the best way to connect. KT Erwin

Thanks for a great web page full of the information I am looking for. I am a business mgmt. graduate from the University of Phoenix, and in my third 6 week class in a master's in education, distance teaching, with a 3.9 gpa in my UoP degree, and a 4.0 in my current program. I was wondering if you have specific advice about or link for applying to online colleges or universities around the world to teach business classes at the end of my graduate degree (my other strength is English writing). I want to start correspondence now to see if I have what is needed to land positions before I graduate because it is critical to start working asap (by next February). I could start tutoring first to get experience, but want to tutor at the best schools/for the best businesses (need that link) to have the best valid experience for teaching in the best positions I can when I obtain my master's (expected next August). What kind of salary does tutoring offer and online teaching offer? God bless!
  • Dr_KT_Erwin Jul 24, 2009 @ 1:04 am | in reply to Anna | delete
Anna, a doctorate does open more teaching options than a masters but don't give up. Your degree is in a highly specialized field so as such a masters can be more valuable than a broader masters degree.
A magic number is 18 hours credits in the subject matter that you want to teach. Analyze your own transcript. Do you have 18 hours in marketing courses that would correspond to course you want to teach in a marketing major? Perform the same analysis on your communication courses. Teaching in a marketing major may open up more choices.
Start by identifying several colleges or universities nearby. Don't count out the locals. Even traditional bricks and motar schools have online courses. When you can make a personal presentation as part of the application process you might get a foot in the door easier as you explain your qualifications and demonstrate your communication abilities. Go for it!
  • Anna Jul 22, 2009 @ 9:57 pm | delete
Really enjoyed your information! Thanks for sharing!

I have a Master's in Integrated Mktg Communications and am interested in online teaching. Do you think it's best to have a PhD to get into a teaching position? Also, I've had difficulty finding areas I'm qualified to teach. Should I broaden into a different field?

    Thanks for your time,

Alvin, don't sell yourself short, you don't need to work free. Academia moves slowly. I am currently teaching a one university that contacted me 2 years after I sent a resume. It's not about you, it's more likely that there is no opening in your area. Apply to 10 more schools. Read my suggestions above in Part 2 of how to get online teaching jobs.
As a UOP graduate, have you applied to UOP or Axia College, both have large online programs. If you are near a UOP campus, apply to teach on-ground as a way into the system plus get teaching experience.
Make a phone call to the 2 schools where you applied. You could be lost in a paper shuffle.

Ana, I am aware of several reputable sites where instructors can register and upload resumes for online teaching jobs. NONE of them charge a fee. This is not necessary and may be a scam. Do not pay for online teaching jobs information; you can do this yourself. • Kathie Jan 25, 2009 @ 2:54 pm | in reply to Tara | delete
Tara, pay for online teaching jobs, like on campus teaching, depends on the university pay scale for adjuncts v. full time faculty, public v. private, university v. community college and whether you have a master's degree or a doctorate. Some colleges/universities pay per student ($100-200) who completes the class, others pay flat rate whether you have 5 students or 40 ($900-3000). These are simply averages from my experience that of other online instructors I know.
Unless you know another instructor at a school where you plan to apply, expect to complete piles of paperwork and submit qualifications before you are given the opportunity to interview and then find our the pay scale. If this is your first online teaching job, get in for the experience then search for other opportunities. This advice from Dr Dani Babb was useful for me. Look above in this lens for the order link for her book, it's a one stop "how to" for online teaching and well worth the modest price

Do you need to take courses in some of the online teaching programs (eg, WebCT, Blackboard, etc.) prior to applying for online teaching jobs or is this something that may be offered to newly hired online teachers? In other words, are you expected to have these skills prior to applying?

    Dr. K,

I wanted to offer a posting suggestion with my limited HTML knowledge, because your website suggestions don't have the URL link. If you want to put a link to a site this is the code to do it right in your text posting. However I can't put the whole code here because it will act like a link!
So here is the body of the code and I will then add the front and back.
    a href="http://www.worldwidelearning.com">World Wide Learning

All you need at the front is the less than
    symbol <
Then after the word learning put
    The a> closes the command.
BTW I learned HTML in a 6 week online course at Ed 2 Go

If it's way too confusing this way or the code didn't work for some reason, just email me at suttonbaymedia@yahoo.com. You also may have just not wanted links so in that case, ignore the post!
