Travel is a product that is extremely difficult to control because there are so many aspects. There is the actual research and booking of your trip, purchasing travel insurance (if you choose to do so), transportation to your destination (air or rail generally), your hotel - cruise - entertainment, etc... Generally the travel provider you purchased your trip through is held responsible for every aspect of the trip (tall order!).
Every time I've used SkyAuction I've had exemplary customer service.Most recently, while submitting travel dates for an auction I won, I listed in the 'comments' section that my husband and I (along with our 4 children) would be staying in the room. The next day, SkyAuction phoned me back to say the number of people for the room exceeded the acceptable occupancy. I explained to the customer service rep I had booked the resort as a "staycation" for my family so the kids could go swimming for the weekend. It was very important that all of us go. The service rep said she would phone the property directly and see if our number of guests was acceptable. I asked what my options would be if we couldn't get something worked out. The rep reassured me that SkyAuction would likely extend the valid redemption period for my auction or else issue me a credit to put towards another auction. In the end, SkyAuction phoned me back to say the resort would rent an additional room at the rate won in the auction (to satisfy the occupancy issue) and there would be no additional fees. We ended up having a WONDERFUL weekend. I won this auction in October and redeemed it in December (over the kids' winter break) two weeks before we wanted to use the room. In case you have something that goes wrong, here are some of your options.

What has everyone been saying about SkyAuction.com? Get a complete view over the years of feedback on SkyAuction. It's not all good, but most travel providers will have some unsatisfied customers (I worked as a travel agent for years and couldn't tell you a travel company that I didn't hear complaints about!). The thing is to LEARN from others bad experiences. Honestly, we haven't personally had a bad experience with them yet.

Surf & Turf, Room & Board, Home & Away, Land & Seafood, Sea & Shore, Steak & Stay, etc...
All of those offers for "your choice of resort" allow you to stay in comforts that time-share owners pay a fortune for at a sliver of the regular cost. The caveat - there are no guarantees on availability. Those deals are strictly what is available. For that reason, they are not good choices for you if: you're travelling during a "peak" travel season for your destination, your dates are inflexible, or you have specific requirements as far as city or location. However, if (for example) you'd like to getaway during the autumn to somewhere in the Great Smoky Mountains, or during the spring to Colorado and are flexible, this is a steal! Is SkyAuction OK for last-minute travel?
SkyAuction is ideal for last-minute travel. You just have to choose the right options! Look for specific properties with a specific check in date. These will usually be for availability in the upcoming weekend or week. If you see something like "7 nts in a 2 bdrm suite at the Summer Bay Resort in Kissimmee, FL for February 8, 2008" you can be assured you will have your accomodation on that date if you win the auction. We booked a suite the night before we needed it. After paying and confirming with the hotel (by telephone), we were ready to go!

The internet's biggest auction also sells travel.
I have never personally used eBay for travel auctions. I am mentioning it here though as I've just found out that you can order travel products through eBay. I'll be researching this venue for purchasing travel products online and perhaps creating a new lens soon (or adding to this one!)
