My Review of a great children's book On The Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman
The most special day to every parent is that day when their own unique little child is born into this world. It is a day of wonder and amazement, a very unique day unlike any other in their life. On this special day, to them alone, has this little precious baby child been born, and there will never be another one in the entirety of time like this baby. On The Night You Were Born is a precious children's book about this very special little person brought into the world on this very special day.
This message is beautifully portrayed to be read to a little child with magical pictures and powerful words to teach them how unique and loved they are. "You are the one and only ever you," is stated in such a way as to allow your child to feel very special.
Nancy Tillman is an accomplished greeting card designer. She has a real talent for combining the poetry of her words with the most precious visual illustrations. In a very rich and beautiful way she has written this wonderful book that is much more than a great children's book, it is a rich compilation of jubilation that celebrates "the night you were born." Through her writing, she portrays this very special occasion in a way of wonderment that captures a child's attention, she writes: "the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you, and the night wind whispered; 'Life will never be the same.' and again 'the sound of your wonderful name' sailed through sky, over the ocean, through the trees until everyone heard it. Your eyes, nose, and toes enchant polar bears, geese, and lady bugs. That wonderful night brought more music into the world.' A little child is told: "So when ever you doubt just how special you are and you wonder who loves you, how much and how far listen for the geese honking high in the sky. (They're singing a song to remember you by).
Or notice the bears asleep at the zoo.
(It's because they've been dancing all night for you!)
Or drift off to sleep at the sound of the wind.
(Listen closely it's whispering your name again!)
Your precious child will beg you to read this book to them over and over again. They will feel as special as they really are, and be reminded once again that "So when ever you doubt just how special you are and you wonder who loves you, how much and how far listen for the geese honking high in the sky. (Their singing a song to remember you by).
I highly recommend this great children's literary work as one that will never get old in your child's library, and one that will speak to them of how very special they really are. They will remember this story and hold it close to their hearts for a lifetime.

About the Author:

She observes, "By using common events such as geese flying, ladybugs landing, and the moon up at morning to celebrate the birth of a child, it's my hope that even as children grow into adults, whenever they see these events they will be reminded of how valuable they are." From Publishers Weekly
The birth of a baby-"the one and only ever you"-causes jubilation throughout creation in this quietly celebratory picture book from newcomer Tillman. Polar bears dance, giraffes weave to the sound of brass horns, and "the moon smiled with such wonder/ that the stars peeked in to see you/ and the night wind whispered,/ 'Life will never be the same.' " Tillman successfully sidesteps the soft-focus sappiness that can accompany this genre. Her writing has the authenticity of whispered conversation; occasionally, she pauses in her exaltations of the baby to address the subject directly: "I think I'll count to three so you can wiggle your toes for me." Her strong, assured paintings truly set this book apart. The pictures subtly radiate golden glints of moonlight, and her almost sculptural rendering style gives her characters a hefty physicality that counterbalances the ethereal sentiments being expressed. Although one suspects that grown-ups will be most taken with the topic and treatment, this is one of those rare baby books that should make both skeptics and sentimentalists of all ages happy. All ages. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade Rhyming text extols and celebrates the uniqueness of a newborn. "Because there had never been anyone like you ever in the world." As the news of the birth travels, creatures around the world celebrate. "When the polar bears heard, they danced until dawn." "the geese flew home." "Heaven blew every trumpet." The text sits on white pages opposite large, richly colored illustrations. The moon appears in all of the paintings as reassuring as the text's sentiment. Golden musical notes float across the sky as white polar bears dance and giraffes sway to the sounds of the moon's saxophone. The dark blue night skies make a beautiful and dramatic setting for this special night. The painterly art and poetic quality of the text make this an attractive book. Parents and grandparents are most likely to appreciate it, but they will undoubtedly want to share it with a child. Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

Dragons (Luxury Lift-the-Flap Learners)
From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. An informational chapter book about a fantastical topic is a great way to interest fantasy fans in nonfiction, and vice versa. In a straightforward text, Penner explores various myths surrounding dragons. Beliefs from several cultures and time periods are represented. Dragons in Chinese lore are "gentle and kind;" and the legendary Aztec "dragon" Quetzalcoatl brings good luck; the "classical" fire-breathing dragons of Europe are fierce and terrifying. Carefully differentiating between reality and myth, the author intersperses bits of dragon lore (for example, a paragraph or two about Saint George, and something about Beowulf) through the text, setting them in italics. Color illustrations showing different types of dragons add interest, and a concluding discussion about "living" dragons such as the Komodo dragon and the mysterious Loch Ness monster ends with some intriguing questions: "Are dragons real? Could there be one living in a lake in Scotland? What do you think?" Diane Foote

Inside Flap Copy
For hundreds of years, people believed dragons were real. They thought dragons lived in caves full of treasure, soared through the air on large bat wings, and breathed fire. Storytellers told tales of dragons that fought knights and kings. Now kids can learn the unnatural history of dragons and recapture their magic with this full-color chapter book.

Germs Are Not for Sharing (Ages 4-7) (Best Behavior Series)
From School Library Journal
PreS-This title provides short, descriptive instructions for inhibiting the spread of germs. However, while Verdick does an excellent job of describing how to get rid of germs, she never touches on what they are or what they do, aside from a small note by a teddy bear doctor stating that Germs can make you sick. Simple colorful cartoons clearly depict the action. Some well-presented tips for parents and teachers on ways to use the book effectively with preschoolers and how to prevent the spread of germs at home or at school are appended. This book is a good choice for teaching youngsters the basics about hygiene, especially if used in conjunction with other materials that present germs and sickness in an age-appropriate manner.-Tamara E. Noises at Night
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-A bedtime story with a new twist, told in jaunty rhymed couplets. A boy describes the noises he hears at night, but instead of being frightened by them, he dreams up wild adventures for himself and his teddy bear suggested by the various drips, taps, and creaks. The hiss of the heater is a snake that he has charmed, the vroom of a truck is the roar of his plane, and the boom of thunder becomes the drum roll for his circus trapeze act. The last sound is the SHHH, SHHHHHH of the quiet that puts him to sleep. Instead of a fearful and anxious protagonist, the authors present a boy who handles scary situations with a clever coping strategy. Whatley's spirited acrylic spreads incorporate delightful bits of humor, such as the nervous pet dog that acts as a comic foil to the brave boy. While this tale does not have the calming verse and quiet reassurance of standard bedtime fare, it is a welcome departure from the formula. Pair it with Laura Simms's The Squeaky Door (Random, 1991) for a storytime featuring bumps in the night.-Rachel G. Payne, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

With dynamic, vibrant illustrations by the popular illustrator, Bruce Whatley, and musical rhyme by Beth Raisner Glass and Susan Lubner, Noises at Night perfectly captures the imagination of every sleepless child at bedtime and shows kids that bedtime is more fun than scary-and exhausting! Octavia And Her Purple Ink Cloud
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-Octavia Octopus and her marine friends like to play a game called how to hide from a hungry creature. When Octavia boasts that she can squirt a purple ink cloud to help her escape, all she can manage are yellow, orange, green, red, and blue ink clouds. But practice makes perfect, and when a hungry shark looms up and the other creatures hide, Octavia manages to squirt a big dark purple cloud and escapes in the nick of time. Large, bright, sometimes garish illustrations show the underwater animals in detail. A page on camouflage and protection and other fun facts about the octopus help make this a learning tool for classrooms. Less-well-advised is a Color your own ink cloud craft page, intended to be copied or downloaded, which is an open invitation for the first enthusiastic young patron to ruin the book. Strictly additional.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

Reda Reil, Baker & Taylor "Cat's Meow," April 2006
"Octavia the octopus lives among many beautiful creatures in the sea, each with a unique ability to hide and protect themselves. Sandy Seahorse, Freddy Flounder and others demonstrate their camouflage tactics and Octavia illustrates that she can squirt ink for protection. Purple ink is what is supposed to protect her, but she has to try many times before she gets the color right. This highly informative story is supplemented with a fun facts in the back of the book and a 'color your own ink cloud' color-sheet meant for reproducing. Highly recommended for all picture book collections."

From the Author
As the mother of a child with a life-threatening peanut allergy, this story has been instrumental in my son's development of maturity and self-sufficiency. "Peter" is the product of a bedtime story I told my son, after I failed to find age-appropriate material from which to teach him about the seriousness of his condition without frightening him. Then and there, I knew I had to share Peter's story with our wonderful community of parents of allergic children worldwide. Enjoy Peter, and best of luck to you and your precious child.

Trosclair And the Alligator
From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-A spicy Louisiana tale about a boy and his dog as they search for turtle eggs. Trosclair and Ollie are drawn to forbidden Bee Island Swamp, home of Gargantua, the notorious, omnivorous, enormous alligator, because it also affords the tastiest turtle eggs. Trosclairs father had warned him to stay away: 'That alligator eat you and Ollie so fast, Père said, 'he wont even stop to burp. Stepping on a log thats really Gargantua, the two flee up the nearest tree where a buzzing hive presents the means for their clever escape. The language is rich with imagery and vernacular that begs to be read aloud. Huggins provides a careful balance between evocative dialect and a readable tale. The mixed-media artwork combines watercolors, ink, and cut paper in a visual gumbo, layered with heat and cool, humor and fear. A successful pairing of text and illustrations.-Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. Trosclair loves living in Bayou Fontaine in Louisiana. He especially likes gliding in his canoe with his dog, Ollie, hunting turtle eggs in the Bee Island Swamp, although Pere has warned him not to go there because the rogue alligator Gargantua is dangerous. Then one day Gargantua tricks Ollie--who tricks the sly monster with a hive of bees. The French Louisiana idiom is a lively part of the book, and the bright, mixed-media double-paged spreads, with lots of collage details, do a great job of showing the stand-off in the swamp between the grinning monster with its sharp teeth and the sly kid and his dog. The tale of the monster sent running is fun, and kids will find the setting a moving part of the action. Hazel Rochman

See Inside Your Body
5.0 out of 5 stars If your cherub loves facts, July 9, 2006
By Siddy Fox "Grandma" (Grayslake, IL United States)
I was looking for a first body book with clear plastic pages to show body organs, and my local book store special ordered this book instead. Boy were we lucky! No plastic pages, but 7 beautifully designed cardboard pages with lift up flaps. As a Biologist, I love this book! It uses lots of correct terms like villi and alveoli, and some reasonable ones like spit and windpipe. The pictures really give a sense of what goes where, and how things work. Each page covers an entire system such as eating and excreting, or bones and muscles.
Not every 4 year old will enjoy this book. But if yours is like ours and absorbs facts about dinosaurs and begs for nature shows instead of Barney, this hits the jackpot.
And the kicker is, it even has sturdy lift up flaps with additional facts. This lets even our 2 1/2 year old interact. He had such fun when we did muscles (they can only pull, never push - squeeze the biceps gently and lift the upper arm, squeeze the triceps and lower it) he showed big sister and she ran in to do that page herself.
It does help if you add your own words and interactions to the book's, especially for young children. But if you have a compulsive learner at home, this book will not insult his or her intelligence, while providing a grand and accurate first look inside.

The Discontented Gopher (Prairie Tale)
5.0 out of 5 stars A tragic parable, skillfully illustrated by "Cricket" magazine staff artist Carolyn Digby Conahan, February 3, 2007
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
A short fairy tale written by L. Frank Baum, best known for his children's classic "The Wizard of Oz", The Discontented Gopher is the story of Zikky the Gopher, who amazingly wins a fantastic golden ball and with it a difficult choice - riches or happiness? Daring to choose riches, he travels through a dangerous world, and achieves the wealth he sought, but at a cost. By the time he returns home, injured and saddened, he has learned that contentment and happiness are more important than wealth and things, but he cannot bring himself to see his mother or play with other gophers again. A tragic parable, skillfully illustrated by "Cricket" magazine staff artist Carolyn Digby Conahan, The Discontented Gopher is a text-heavy story especially recommended for young readers who are ready to start reading chapter books. A word list at the end offers definitions for words such as "effaced" and "vainglory" that might be unfamiliar to young readers. Highly recommended.

From the Author
Have you ever had a secret? Of course, we all have! Some of us have had many! But could you imagine what would happen if that secret fell into the wrong hands? Well, that's the very sort of idea that gave birth to this story, Kendra Kandlestar and the Box of Whispers. I think my favorite characters in this story are the wise old wizard Uncle Griffinskitch, Captain Jinx (the tough-as-nails grasshopper whose tongue is as sharp as all her swords), and Trooogul, the Unger. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
About the Author
Lee Edward Födi has been writing and illustrating stories about magic, monsters and meddle-some animals for as long as he can remember. Growing up on a farm, he harbored childhood aspirations for taking over the family business. Unfortunately, this dream came to an abrupt end when he accidentally ran the tractor over his dad's outhouse (thankfully, his dad was not inside at the time). As a result, Födi went on to pursue his love of art, mythology and storytelling, all of which (luckily) do not require any skill in operating heavy machinery. Födi currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.

Making Healthy Choices: A Story to Inspire Fit, Weight-Wise Kids (Girls' Edition)
Book Description
*****2006 & 2007 "Excellent Products" iParenting Media Award WINNER*****
Written for kids ages 7-14 and available in both a Girls' and Boys' Edition, "Making Healthy Choices - A Story to Inspire Fit, Weight-Wise Kids" is a ground-breaking piece of fictional children's literature that has been heralded by an array to health industry experts for its approach in helping overweight kids get on a healthy track, and motivating those within a healthy weight range to not only continue making wise lifestyle choices, but also better understand and empathize with peers currently struggling with a weight problem.
This fictional children's story depicts the life of Patty, who typifies the average overweight American kid as she encounters the emotional and physical challenges associated with an adolescent overweight condition. The story culminates with Patty overcoming these challenges and improving her health by better understanding the importance of good nutrition and exercise, and through an increased awareness of the overwhelming number of cultural influences that can adversely affect her ability to make healthy choices.
This tale of hope spotlights a representative overweight child who, by better recognizing and circumventing negative outside influences while proactively making positive lifestyle choices, achieves her goal of living a healthier, happier life.
Book includes a Parent's Section with Story Discussion Question prompts to faciliate dialogue with the young reader.
From the Publisher
In addition to West Virginia's Kanawha County Public Library formally integrating almost two-dozen units of this book into its inventory, and with other public library systems following suit, the title also passed the California Department of Education's Legal and Social Compliance Review and, as such, is currently listed among the Department's online list of "Legal and Social Compliance Approved Out-of-Cycle Instructional Materials" - items which may be purchased using either Proposition 20 Lottery or IMFRP funds. In addition, the book was formally adopted by both HealthTime, LLC for inclusion in its structured adolescent weight management program, and Revgear Sports who has bundled the title within its "Empowerment Package" - a compilation of adolescent healthy living tools.
From the Author
"This book offers a unique opportunity for frank dialogue between children and their caregivers - parents, educators, pediatricians, dietitians, fitness trainers, and youth program leaders alike. Such discourse will better assure kids of all shapes and sizes understand the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices, and learn practical strategies related thereto. Closing this communication gap is also apt to inspire children to take ownership of their own health condition and actually apply this key learning in their daily lives. This book's overriding message that healthy living is as simple as consistently making one positive, relatively easy choice after another."

QX And The Dream Runner: A Novella
Book Description
QX is a girl who thought she would always be trapped in the Gloomgus Gulch where every day was the same as every other day. Time stood very, very still in the Gulch. QX wondered how old she was. She could be ten, maybe fourteen years old, but there was no way to tell for sure. The days, and even the years, suffered from a boring sameness.
Nothing ever changed. No one in the Gulch ever changed, except maybe QX. She was always day dreaming, but why was she beginning to have dreams at night? Dreams were strictly forbidden. Every Gulchian knew that. What would become of her if anyone ever found out about her night dreams? They would surely betray her to the all powerful Great Gorgon. She could be banished forever. Why was she changing when no one else was?
Becoming a teenager was hard enough for QX, but the choice she would have to make soon would be an overwhelming surprise. It would be the biggest and most alarming surprise of her lifetime.
