Out of State Art Shows
A Tough Decision

Why, when, and where does an artist decided to go further afield to sell their work?
The most critical thing is to determine what your purpose is to go out of your area, to travel. There are lots of expenses related to a far away show.
Here are the most common ones:
Travel expenses including
Gasoline
Meals (usually in restaurants)
Hotel
Wear and tear on your vehicle
Show expenses
Time for set up--often the day before
Meals
Water
A minimum of two people
Insurance
Security
Replacing things you forgot--because you always forget something.
So first determine why you are interested in going further from your home.
Determine Your Purpose!

Keep Your Booth Professional
Your Booth is Your Store
There is no one way to set up a booth, but make your set up easy and as quick as possible. You don't want to spend hours doing set up and break down. It shouldn't take more than an hour to do either.
Use a commercial quality tent that is easy to set up. EZUP is one popular brand, but there are others. Do not go the cheap route with your tent. I have been using the same tent for three years now and it has held up just fine.

Make Sure That You Carry Insurance
Make Sure That You Have Insurance
Don't lose your livelihood because you have not wanted to spend money on insurance. Too many artists leave off on this and are sorry later. It doesn't cost that much to cover yourself for liability and loss.

- I'm not up to art shows yet. I've donated paintings to a charity art auction, and sold some on ebay. I need to take an art class or two and really get a lot better before I participate in an art show. Good lens! Linda

- I haven't attempted an out of state show - still just an on again off again artist, but I did send some prints with a friend down to an event in West Palm Beach Florida a number of years ago - Turned out the gallery owner had a warrant for his arrest and was being picketed - needless to say no one stopped to buy anything. :)
