History of Ooty

Ooty landscape

In the Year 1819, John Sullivan, the then district collector of Coimbatore, visited this hill station for the first time. He is recognized for bringing the gorgeous hill resort before the public eye. Some Englishmen went to Ooty in Tamil Nadu before 1819 even. In the year of 1818, J.C Whish and N.W. Kinderseley visited this place. But it was in 1819 that the route to Ooty was laid and the potential of Ooty as a worthy tourist destination was discovered. The first road from Coimbatore to Nilgiri was laid in the year of 1821 (Shirumugai to Kotagiri). Afterward in the year of 1832 the first Coonoor Ghat road was laid. In the year 1871, the existing metal ghat road was constructed. This road connects Kallar and Coonoor by covering a distance of about 25 kilometers.

It was John Sullivan who constructed the first house in Ooty (the Stone House). Steadily the hill resort started gaining fame within the tourists' circle and historical Ooty became one of the most notable hill resorts in India.

Doddabetta Peak

The Doddabetta Peak is visited by large number of visitors and even in the off seasons the place receives reasonable visitors. The picturesque location and the scenic splendor of the place makes it one of the most magnificent sites in Ooty. The name Doddabetta derived from the Kannada words: Dodda means big and Betta means mountain . The most outstanding feature of Dodabetta Peak is the flattened curves at its peak. These empty slopes are wrapped with Sholas, flowering sub-elphine shrubs, Rhododendron trees, and thick bristly grasses which gives a green color to this mountain. At the peak of the Doddabetta is an observatory which is open to the public. The observatory has two telescopes which can provide a clear view of the Mysore plateau and the plains of Coimbatore.
