What this lens is about

There are free open source alternatives to commercial software for almost any purpose you can imagine. But finding out the best ones may be hard. This lens is a list of the best open source software I have found and tested. Of course, you are free to disagree with my recommendations, but if this is the case, I beg you to share your point of view with others by writing your comments below. Thanks !

Tools checklist

Besides the main applications most people use, there are many small applications and utilities that at a given moment in time are required to perform specific jobs. Below is a list (by no means complete) of useful applications I have used, mostly Open Source:

Office Applications
OpenOffice - The Open Source alternative to Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Development Environment
StarUML - Editor of Unified Modelling Language Documentation
Eclipse - The most complete Open Source Development Framework
Cygwin - Unix emulator on Windows
Proxomitron - Local Proxy. Very useful for tracing communication issues

Mencoder - Another free video editor and converter
divxplayer - DivX Player

GSiteCrawler - Sitemap generator

DataBases
PostgreSQL - Open Source, powerful and stable DBMS
MySQL - Currently, the ubicuous Open Source DBMS
Power*Architect - Database Modelling Tool

File Transfer

eMule - Peer to Peer Utility

Programming languages

Content management - Joomla

Even for a web site with a few pages, a content management system is an important tool to help create and structure the site content, to ease the creation and maintenance of common elements (header, footer, menus,...) and to ensure it complies with standards.

Joomla is the Open Source CMS that best covers my expectations.
