How to Start and Develop a Great Transport Empire
It's easier to install on newer operating systems and is as addictive as the original. Here I'll present some of the most common strategies that will help you develop your transport empire and have as much fun as possible playing OpenTTD.

Installing the Game
If you haven't tried OpenTTD yet and want to play, you can get the game on their official OpenTTD homepage. Besides the OpenTTD installer, you will also need to download and install OpenGFX, OpenSFX and OpenMSX.These are needed for the base graphics and basic sound. All of them are available on the above link. Alternatively you can also use the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe data files.
Starting the Game
After you successfully install OpenTTD, it's time to start a new game. Which type of map you select and what settings you use is entirely up to you. I usually go with the temperate landscape style. As soon as you begin the game you will have to decide which type of transport to start with. The easiest to begin with is a transport service by road. All you need is an industry, that offers something and a factory, that needs the same thing.
You build your stations near each industry, connect them with a road, buy some trucks via the vehicle depot and you're done. I admit, this might be a bit oversimplified, but the easiest service to set up is a transport service by road. Trucks and buses don't cost much. But don't expect to make much money that way.
The best way to make money in this game is still a train service. Its more expensive to build a railroad infrastructure, but you will get more money out of it. And in the end that's whats important, making more money so you can spend it and crush the competition.
How Do I Build My First Train Route?
The distance between the two factories plays an important role. The further you transport cargo the more income it generates, so don't pick your targets too close.
As soon as you find your target points, find the best route between them. The best route isn't always the shortest one. It depends on the costs to build it and the difficulty of the terrain. You don't want it to be too difficult, trains are much slower if they're going up hill.
As soon as you build your first train route, buy a train and some wagons and enjoy your first income. As you continue developing your transport empire, your track system will become more and more complex. At some point you will have to start using signals. They will make gameplay much more easier, so learn how they work as soon as you can.
Mandatory Train Servicing
Your trains will break down eventually. That's more or less a fact. As your vehicles get older, they will start to break down more and more often. To keep your trains in good shape and to get as much performance out of them as you can, you will have to send them to the train depot every now and then. You can set the servicing interval for each train separately, but keeping the interval as short as possible doesn't help always. And if it does, your train will lose time to get to the depot and back.
Sometimes the nearest depot just isn't near enough. There is another way you can keep your trains well serviced. Each time a train visits a service depot, it will be taken care of. So all you have to do is sending your train to a depot and it will count as a service.
But how do you do that, except by selecting each train separately and sending it to a depot? Turns out, you can build a mandatory servicing depot. All you have to do is build a depot, connect it to the track and set the signals the right way.
Usually the tracks are built for just one way. That means your trains can travel to their destination on one track, but have to use another one to get back. If you build a service depot just next to that track and connect it in the right way, your trains will have to enter the service depot every time, they will travel on that track.
All you have to do is put a signal between the two connections, that faces the wrong way. This is one of the most efficient ways to service your trains. The best place to build a service depot is usually only a few squares from a train station.
Good Design is the Key to Success
As soon as you begin to use a dual track system (and I strongly suggest you start using it as soon as possible), you have to decide if your trains will travel on the right or the left. Once you made a decision, stick with it! If you don't , you'll end up with a big mess, lots of crashed trains and little or no profit at all.
To make your trains use the right side of the tracks, use signals. They really are one of the most important features of the game.
You also have to make sure to build efficient stations. If you want to maximize your profit, your trains always have to get a free track as soon as possible. If they don't, your costs will go up and your profit down.
Bellows are some layouts that might give you ideas for your own perfect railroad system. Some of them I tried already, and the rest I'll try in the near future.
Making Profit the Fast Way

I don't want to add any cheats for this game, in my opinion, it's more fun to play without them. I'm including this strategy because I don't think it's a cheat although you can make some money fast this way.
It's especially helpful if you start running low on cash and you need some extra money to continue building your transport empire.
In OpenTTD industries will make only as much cargo available to your stations as completely necessary. That means, if your trains won't visit the station often enough, less and less cargo will be waiting for them when they arrive.
There are 2 basic ways to deal with this, transport the cargo to a nearer target or use more transport vehicles. If you choose a target that's close by, you won't get big profits. On the other hand, if you use more trains, the running costs could outweigh your profit.
There is another way of dealing with this problem, basically a mixture of the above two solutions. You just have to build a feeder service for your station. A feeder service, sometimes called a "piglet", is another vehicle, that picks up the cargo at the factory, transports it to your station and drops it off.
Usually feeder services are used in situations where there is no other way, like at Oil Rigs. You use a boat to transport the oil from the Oil Rig to your nearby train station and use your trains to transport it from there.
But feeder stations can also be used for maximizing available cargo at train stations. Lets suppose you have a train station near a coal mine and you transport the cargo to a power plant that's far away.
The profit for one load is maximized cause of the distance. But there is not much cargo to transport cause your train only picks it up every few days. If you want to make more money off this train route, you have to get more cargo.
And the easiest way to get more cargo is to build a feeder service. Build 2 lorry stations, one near the coal mine and one near your train station. When you're done, connect them with a road and build a road depot.
Connect the road depot to your road. Now build a coal truck, set it to transport coal from the coal mine to your train station and you are done. It doesn't matter if the piglet picks up coal from a lorry station, both stations, including the train station, will fill up on coal in a matter of minutes.
Your trains will always leave the train station filled up and you will get a better profit. The only thing you will have to get used to is the piglet's income. It will always be negative, cause it doesn't actually transport cargo to an industry but to your own train station.
Such a strategy is an easy way to earn a good amount of money, but it also makes this game a little to easy and you get bored pretty easily. So use it only if necessary.
A Small Tutorial
Additional OpenTTD Tips
- Don't let your trains climb much. On the long run it's better to build a tunnel or go around a hill then to climb it.
- If your trains travel a long distance, they make more profit.
- If you want to build on farmland, plant trees first on all squares you want to build. This decreases the price significantly.
- Upgrade your bridges as the game progresses. On cheap bridges even faster trains will go slow.
- Make your turns at least 2 squares long and they won't slow down.
- When removing tracks and stations, don't use the bomb tool. Use the toggle tool (the tool that looks like an excavator) and use "remove tracks". You will get some money back this way.

- I love this - I play both OpenTTD and Simutrans, and some of these tips can apply to both. I've spent plenty of time designing crazy new junctions.
