Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the practice of making modifications and adjustments to your webpages as well as external links in order to get the search engines to rank you higher for keywords and phrases that are relavent to your website.
SEO is complex, however, with practice and research, anyone can optimize their own website. You have to be willing to spend time doing the things that are necessary to get your site found.
Basic Steps for Search Engine Optimization- KEYWORD RESEARCH
I recommend that you use Wordtracker, as well as these other keyword research tools to help create your blueprint of keywords. Don't skip keyword research. Without the proper phrases, search engine optimization is worthless.
It is important enough to repeat...when trying to get your site found on any search engine, start with keyword research and do not skip this excersize.
- Keyword Research at Wordtracker
- Wordtracker is a very useful tool in creating your keyword list for optimization. This should be your first stop along your road to optimization. The tool is free, although it is more useful and has more features if you purchase one of their plans which include a daily plan, monthly plan or yearly plan.
- Overture Keyword Tool
- Although now owned by Yahoo, the Overture keyword tool still works. The main drawback of this tool is that it consolidates plurals. For example, a search for the phrase "engine" or "engines" will give you the same results.
- Goole Adwords
- The search engine Google has a keyword tool within their Adwords program and can help shed some light onto the phrases that the potential visitors to your site may use.
Basic Steps for Search Engine Optimization - WEBPAGE OPTIMIZATION
Once you have your keyword list created you should review all of your webpages. Each of your pages should have two or three keywords that will fit nicely from your keyword list. Use an HTML editing tool and update each of your webpages. Try to include your keywords into each of the following tags. This is the basis of search engine optimization.
Note: As important as these tags are, the best way to optimize your pages would be to have relevant content. The content should be consistant with the tags. You should also not overdo the tags (keyword stuffing).

Title Tag
The title tag is one of the most important tags on your pages for optimization. This information not only gets used by the search engines for rankings, but is sometimes used in the search results link.0 points

Meta Tags
When striving for results through search engine optimization, you should always include your phrases in the Meta Description tag. Again, this tag is important as it gets used in the search engine algorithms and will also get used as the search results description. You may also add the Meta Keywords tag, however, this is much less important.0 points

External and Internal Links
You should have some pages that you link to that have the phrase within their URL. These can be internal pages within your site or external pages at a different URL. For example: <a href="YOUR-KEYWORDS.html">0 points

Misc. Tags
You can include your phrase within other tags such as alt tags, image names, bolded text, etc.0 points
Basic Steps to Optimize for Search Engines - LINK POPULARITY
- Open Directory
- This directory may be difficult to get a link, however, it is worth it if you can. Submit once and wait. This is one of the first sites that any search engine opimization company will submit to.
- Joe Ant
- I recommend that you become an editor of this directory to get your link in. It is free as an editor.
- Wikipedia
- You must have a site that fits well into one of the Wikipedia topics, but if you do, this is a great place to get a link.
- Yahoo
- Will cost you $299 per year. I will typically do this for the first year and follow the ROI to see if it is worth it for following years.
- WOW Directory
- Claims to be the largest free directory.
- Build links at Squidoo
- You probably know of this website for helping to build link popularity since you are reading this. Squidoo is a great site for helping with search engine optimization as well as a fun site to build information on things you like.
