Simply put, a stock option is an instrument that gives you the right to purchase or sell a stock above or below a certain price before a set date, however having an option does not mean you are required to purchase the underlying asset.

How Do Stock Options Work
Before we go any further, you need to know that before you begin trading options, that there is a moderate degree of risk. The more uninformed about your investing the higher your degree of risk. So before you invest your first dollar, make sure you learn how to understand the stock market.
Anyway back to how stock options work. There are two types of options. The first one are "calls", the second option are called "puts". Investopedia.com defines them as such:

Before I learned the art and science of trading options, I didn't have a clue how to go about accomplishing my goals. When I first started, I wasn't trying to live the comfortable lifestyle I live now, I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. But trying to trade options without knowing what you're doing, is the same thing as me telling NASA that I will be flying the next shuttle mission. They wouldn't even let me through the gate, let alone hand me the keys!
But the point is, you got to have a solid action plan, a basic understanding of the fundamentals of the stock market before you can become a successful options trader.
