Use String Divination For Inspiration

Ancient cultures from around the world have looked to nature; the stars, clouds, rocks, trees and animals for insight and inspiration. Many cultures have developed casting tools using shells, seeds, stones, sticks or bones. Today most people recognize systems such as the Egyptian Tarot, Chinese I Ching and the Scandinavian Runes.

In the Hawaiian language Kaula means rope, cord, string. A similar word Kaula Kane spoken with a different intonation means prophet, seer and Kaula Wahine means prophetess or priestess. Whether used for divination or for the development of creativity or imagination, the Kaula is a tool for accessing inner knowledge and Divine Inspiration.

This lens will ask you to Suspend Disbelief and explore the possibilities that the string can be used by Seers to explore the answers hidden within.

Oracles

Suspend Disbelief and Trust the Oracle

What I do with my hands forces you to pay attention.

"An oracle helps you to focus. It doesn't matter what device you use. If it gets your attention the chatter in your head quiets and you can listen. You are really listening to yourself, to what you already know. It's not so much about the future. It's more about what's inside."

Imaginative Play with String

String Doodle

The Kaula can be used with children to develop creativity and imagination. Stories can be told or written about the string pictures and the pictures can be reproduced by drawing or mounting the patterns on cardboard.

Take a 50" loop of nylon string. Nylon works best because of its flexibility. Hold the hanging loop in one hand above a surface. Drop the string and see the pattern. You can also make small changes in the pattern by pushing the string around with your finger until you get a picture that you like.

Don't forget to give your string picture a name.

Influencing Healing

Interpreting string pictures can bring about insights and answers to problems. The string image opens up the pathway of communication between the conscious mind, the subconscious and the higher self. It unravels the blockage of old thought patterns, releasing you to new ways of looking at something. You have the power to interpret the string patterns anyway you want. Interpret it in the way that is the best for you because what you think will influence what happens.

Intuitive and Spiritual Insights

Your Inner Psychic

Before dropping the string ask yourself a question. The subconscious works with the conscious mind and the string is dropped into a pattern that can be interpreted to give you answers about the past, present or future. Remember that the image gives you insights only about the probability of what is happening now. Answers are always about the present moment. Anything can be changed.

A String Ritual

Your Inner Oracle

Take a deep breath and relax. Ask for a picture or a symbol that will help you to understand a relationship in your life. It could be a relationship within yourself, with others or with the environment or things in your life. (For example, give me a symbol of my relationship to money.) Toss the string and study the string picture for meaning. Interpret the image as a symbolic answer to your question.

It's simple... just try it!

Center yourself by doing some piko piko breathing (center to center). Inhale with your focus at the crown of your head. Exhale with your focus at your navel.

Focus on a relationship or a problem that you would like to have more insight on. It can be within yourself, with others or with the environment.

Drop the string loop and look at the pattern. Does the picture tell you anything?

For more clarity, keep changing the string pattern by slowly moving the string around until you get a message from the new string picture.

This Can Change

Change the pattern for more insight

Make changes in the string picture for more insights or for something different if there was something represented in the pattern that you did not like. "If fear comes up change the pattern until fear goes away. Changing the pattern changes something internal. Change the inner pattern that this outer thing is a reflection of." Take another deep breath and change the image until it feels good to you. Confidently affirm the change by saying: this is the way I want it to be. You can also ask questions in a different way to explore other avenues of thought.

No Words Needed

Interpretation does not have to be in words - Go inside and feel

Toss the string and make changes until it feels right to you. You do not have to interpret the meaning of the pattern in words. Tune into your body to see how it feels to you.

Variations for Asking Advice

The kaula can be tossed to answer yes and no questions. Determine ahead of time the response pattern (Example: if the answer is yes the string will fall to the right of a determined point. If the answer is no the string will fall to the left or count the number of times the string crosses over itself and determine that an even number is yes and a odd number is no).

Take a deep breath, relax and ask for advice on some matter (example: what is the best thing to do in this situation? Without looking, choose a colored string or run your fingers over the rainbow colored string until they stop.

The Advice Pattern (From Shaman Stones, Serge Kahili King)

White (Ike) = information source
Red (Kala ) = restriction/freedom
Orange (Makia) = confusion/focus
Yellow (Manawa) = weakness/energy
Green (Aloha) = anger/love
Blue (Mana) = fear/power
Violet (Pono ) = doubt/optimism

The advice is to reduce the first quality listed above for each color and to increase the second quality in any way you can.

Huna and String Divination

(Based on the Huna Philosophy as taught by Serge Kahili King)

Ike - The World Is What You Think It Is: Suspend disbelief. Be open to inspiration and new insights.
Kala - There Are No Limits: There is no separation between you, the string, and the universe. Changing the string pattern changes something inside of you and changes within are reflected in the image made by the string.
Makia - Energy Flows Where Attention Goes: Put your focus on what you want. Make changes in the string pattern to symbolize what you want to see happen.
Manawa - Now Is The Moment Of Power: Focus on the present moment. The string image is about the present moment. Anything can be changed.
Aloha - To Love Is To Be Happy With: If you don't feel happy about the string image or if fear enters into the picture. Change the pattern until the fear disappears or until it feels right to you.
Mana - All Power Comes From Within: You can interpret the string image in any way that you want.
Pono - Effectiveness Is The Measure Of Truth: Be open to new possibilities. The string pictures provide new information to your consciousness.

What is the quipu or knotted cord?

A brief summary of the quipu or knotted cord

Knotted cords are found among many indigenous cultures. Each knot held information, much like the string figure patterns and their use in divination.

Quipus or khipus (sometimes called talking knots) were recording devices used in the Inca Empire and its predecessor societies in the Andean region. A quipu usually consisted of colored spun and plied thread or strings from llama or alpaca hair. It could also be made of cotton cords. The cords contained numeric and other values encoded by knots in a base ten positional system. Quipus might have just a few or up to 2,000 cords.

Quipu is the Spanish spelling and the most common spelling in English. Khipu () is the word for "knot" in Cusco Quechua (the native Inca language); the kh is an aspirated k. In most Quechua varieties, the term is kipu.

Another Glass Bead Game

Internet Articles about String, Knotted Cords and Divination

Just like the "Glass Bead Game" you start out with a topic and like the spiders web you reach out to the possible connections. My initial pivot was that string figures are a child's game. The threads then branched out to find that string figures are really much, much, more than a game played by children. You will find many threads to this topic, connecting the string to knotted cords and divination.
