Ride Irvine's Big Orange Balloon

Ranked #2,551 in Travel & Places, #85,337 overall

Free Balloon Ride at Orange County Great Park

You're driving along the 5 and 405 in Irvine, and you see a big orange balloon. What's that? No, it's not a car dealership. It's a free balloon ride at the Orange County Great Park off of Sand Canyon, just north of the 5/405 merge and the Irvine Spectrum. Why not stop by?

Orange County Great Park Balloon's Hours:
•10AM-3PM Thurs, Friday
•9AM-3PM Sat, Sunday
•7PM-10PM Thurs-Sunday
•(There's also a Farmer's Market 10-2 on Sunday)

DIRECTIONS: See the Great Park website's directions, but note that the turnoff from Sand Canyon onto Marine Way, the OCGP's entrance, is easy to miss when going NE, because it's immediately after you pass under the 5. See this Google Street View of the Great Park Entrance so you won't get fooled -- follow that white truck!

Above: The Great Park Carousel (also free) and the balloon decorated for Halloween. See my photo gallery & videos below.

There's often a wait for the balloon, but that's okay -- take your kids to the playground by the visitor's center, ride the carousel, take a walk on the lawn, play frisbee or soccer, skateboard, or relax at a park bench or picnic table. The visitor's center gives you a remote buzzer that calls you when it's your turn to ride the balloon.

About the Orange Country Great Park

Formerly the El Toro Marine Base at Sand Canyon & 5 Freeway

The Orange County Great Park was created after the El Toro Marine Base closed. The goal is to build a sustainable FREE park for Orange County like New York's Central Park. It will have everything from a museum and library to sports and recreation facilities, a lake and a wilderness hiking area. There's already a lot open:

Balloon, free carousel, Farmer's Market, concerts and movie nights, harvest and other festivals, sports clinics (free croquet and frisbee get-togethers)!, a community garden, gardening classes, and free skating rink in winter.

I guess we'll have to get off the freeway next time and check this out. We often travel past the former base on our way to visit family in San Diego. Thanks for the info.
