The Orange Tiger Butterfly is also known as the Tiger Butterfly, Banded Orange Butterfly or the Banded Orange Heliconian and its scientific name is Dryadula phaetusa. Live adult butterflies photographed in the wild at DuPage County, Illinois, USA.
Habitat: Open spaces, meadows, fields, roadsides, streamsides.
Life cycle: Eggs are laid in clusters on leaves of asters. Larvae feed on aster foliage. Caterpillars are brown with yellow bands and many branching spines; last brood overwinters. Chrysalis is mottled gray, yellow and brown. There are usually several broods per season.
Range: Yukon to Newfoundland to southern Mexico

    Love butterflies. No orange butterflies on this side of the big pond (don't think they are prevalent in Europe), but tortoiseshells and other species.

    My favorite orange butterly is the Monarch but I also enjoy the American Painted Lady and Pearl Crescent tremendously. Great lens!
