Woodwind instruments consist of a tube with a mouthpiece at one end and an opening at the other end. The tubing has holes, keys, pads and comes in several parts wjich are put together to form the instrument. Sounds are produced by blowing air down the tude such that the air vibrates and flows out the other end plus any uncovered holes. Different sounds are made by covering holes or pressing keys to cover holes, in varied finger patterns or configurations.

Woodwind instruments vary in their size, sound, mouthpiece, finger patterns and materials they are made from. There are usually two or three musicians for each woodwind instrument in a typical orchestra.
