Enjoy Some of the Finest Players; Learn the Great Oboe Solos in the Orchestra
In some musical styles the oboe shines brightest in the orchestral literature. The three B's--Beethoven, Brahms and Bach-- all wrote wonderfully for the oboe in the orchestral setting. Mozart, Mahler and others gave the oboe an important role in the full orchestra. The oboe has been an instrumentation choice for centuries of both well-known and lesser-known composers of orchestral music, for classical and commercial music. Here are the famous works for orchestral oboe and some of today's leading performers of those works.

"The main attraction of the program proves to be Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin suite, which he never inscribed commercially. Always the impulsive romantic, Munch would often vacillate his tempos between rehearsals and actual performance, depending on the spur of the moment to decide what he wanted, which were often fast tempos and ignored repeats. The opening of Iberia, for instance, sets a strong and resolute pace which the Perfumes of the Night counters with a hint of oriental languor. The NBC wind, harp, and viola section luxuriate in the soft palette, wafting all kinds of fragrant temptations about. Visions of Hedy Lamarr and Charles Boyer in the Casbah, if not the Alhambra. The last tones point to the feria that breaks out in the whipped-up Morning of the Festival Day. Munch has the NBC working at bravura level--particularly violin Mischa Mischakoff--much as they must for their normal Maestro. The trumpet section and pizzicato strings have our feet pounding our best fandango rhythms as Munch charges to the final peroration with gleeful abandon."

TheClassicalStation.org announces today that its weekly program "Preview!" will feature an interview with oboist Joseph Robinson. The interview can be heard during the station's Sunday, May 11 program that airs from 6-9 p.m. ET.
During the program, Robinson will discuss with "Preview!" host Deana Vassar his 27-year career as Principal Oboe with the New York Philharmonic. In addition, the two will talk about Robinson's favorite conductors to work with, as well as his May 18 performance with The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle.
"It has been said that Joseph Robinson has 'the power to turn a simple note into bliss,'" says Vassar. "His concert with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle performing Vaughan Williams' 'A Minor Concerto' should make for a dream of an afternoon."
Robinson remains active in the musical community since retiring from the Philharmonic in 2005. He continues to appear as an oboe soloist, chamber musician, teacher and clinician. He is Artist in Residence at Duke University during the spring semester, and spends time in the summer coaching and teaching aspiring musicians at the Bowdoin International Music Festival.
