Orchids - the largest diversity flowers

Orchid is a flower that has a lot number of variety. There about 25,000 kinds of orchid flower which had been discovered (Schuttleworth et al, 1970). It's very popular and liked by many flower lovers because of it beautiful structure, smell, and the high price. Beauty and variety of orchid can be clearly seen, especially on: it morphology, color, and vegetative structure.

Actually, orchid plant has widely distribution with the largest diversity. Almost orchid grows on the tropical and sub tropical climate.

Kind of orchids plant

Kind of orchids plant are based on the habitat and place of growth

A. Epiphyte orchid is an orchid which becomes parasite at the other stalks or plants but not damaging or impairing "main mother plant". A part used by orchid to stick is common root, whereas to look for food is air root.

Epiphyte orchid needs protection from the sunshine. In original habitat, almost orchid is a parasite at the big tree and shady condition. For examples: Dendrobium, Cattleya, Ondocidium, and Phalaenopsis.

B. Semi epiphyte orchid is parasite located on the other plants or trees, but not damaging or impairing it mother plant. Besides to stick on the growth medium, root also has a function as the air root used to grow and look for food. For examples : Epidendrum, Leila, and Brassavola.

C. Soil orchid (Terrestris orchid) is orchid that lives on the soil surface. It needs sunshine fully or directly. For examples: Vanda, Renanthera, Arachnids, and Aranthera.

D. Saprophyte orchid is an orchid growth on the medium which has compost substance. In a growth process, saprophyte orchid only needs little sunshine. For example: Goodyera sp.

E. Lithophytes orchid is orchid growth on the rocks. It's usually growth under the sunshine fully. For example: Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis.

The growth factors of orchids

A. Climate

Winter and rainfall only give little influence to the orchid growth. Actually, sunshine is needed by orchid plant. Every orchid has different necessity, depends on it kind. Based on the orchid kind, the sunshine necessity can be explained as like as these examples:
- Arachnids Maggie Oei, Vanda pensile, and Vanda quarter needs 100% sunshine,
- Dendrobium and Aranda Hybrid need 50-65% sunshine,
- Oncidium Hybrid needs 60-75% sunshine,
- Phalaenopsis Hybrid needs 10-15% sunshine, and
- Cattleya Hybrid needs 20-30% sunshine.

Temperature suitable to the orchid growth is among 15°C to 28°C. Based on the temperature suitable to the orchid growth, it can be shared into 3 types, such as:
- Cold type needs18-21°C temperature, for example : Cymbidium sp and Miltona sp.
- Medium type needs18-24°C temperature, for example : Dendrobium and Oncidium sp.
- Warm type needs 21-29°C temperature, for example : Vanda sp, Arachnids sp, and Renanthera sp.

Relative Humidity (RH) needed by orchid is about 60-85 %. RH has a function to prevent "the extreme" evaporation. It's better keeping it humidity to be not extremely higher in the night because it can make young bud becomes rotten.

Because it, now you can try to make a growth medium to be not quiet wet. When orchid has low humidity, it can be sprayed by fog sprayer around the orchid.

B. Orchid growth medium

There are three kinds of orchid growth medium. such as:

Growth medium to epiphyte and semi epiphyte orchid which consists of: fern fiber that had been processed, bark that had been removed for it sap, coconut husk that had been immersed into the water for two weeks, palm fiber, pieces of sugar tree bark, wood charcoal, broken brick or roof tile. All substance must be splits and placed around the plant and root of orchid. Semi Epiphyte orchid, which it root is sticking at the medium, needs supplement, such as: compost, or manure fertilizer.

Terrestrial orchid growth medium. Actually, orchid plant grows at the soil, so it needs to be added compost, husk, manure fertilizer, fern fiber etc.

Growth medium to semi terrestrial orchid. This medium needs any big broken roof tiles, bark, fern fiber etc as a substance.

C. Altitude of place

Based on the altitude place suitable to orchid plant can be shared into three things, such as:

Warm orchid requires 21-30°C temperature with 0-650 meters above sea level altitude. For examples: Dendrobium phalaenopsis, Onchidium Papillo, and Phaphilopedillum Bellatum.

Medium orchid requires 15-21°C temperature with 150-1500 meters above sea level altitude.

Cold orchid requires 9-21°C temperature with 1500 meters above sea level altitude. For example: Cymbidium.

Please click here for more information

A. Spacing, stitching and mowing

Spacing and stitching are done at the place which had been adapted to the kind of orchids. It must have suitable characteristic for epiphyte or terrestris orchid.

Mowing is done when orchid is still existed inside the bottle. Orchid is separated into a pot that has been previously prepared as proper as the orchid kind.

B. Fertilization

Macro substances are a substance needed by orchid plant in the large amount, whereas micro substances are needed in the little amount. All substances can be taken from the air or water. The orchid fertilization can be shared into 3 steps.

Seedling fertilization uses N, P, K with a composition of 6:3:1, whereas a synthetic fertilizer consists of Urea:ES:ZK with a composition of (0.6:0.3 :0.1) gram/1 liter of fresh water.

Mid-size flower fertilization uses N, P, K with a composition 3:3:3 and doesn't need fertilizer addition. It can be composed from Urea : DS:K2SO4 with a composition (0.3:0.3:0.3) gram/1 liter of fresh water.

The "flower-size" orchid fertilization can be done as much as an example : blossom orchid can be fertilized by a composition as N:P:K = 1:6:1.

C. Watering and showering

Source of water used to be watering orchid plant can be derived from:

Tap water is better to watering process. It has high pH level, so it needs to be decreased by the acid substance adding, such as: HCl. The suitable water pH level for orchid plant is about 5.6 to 6.

Well water is also good to watering process because contenting of many minerals, but you must be careful to use the water derived from a well available in the high calcium concentration area.

Rain water can be deposited from a tank or drum. It's better to watering process.

River water is not known surely. It contents of fungi and bacteria which can disturb orchid plant, so it must be checked before used.

Pesticide spray is routinely and regularly done, at least, once time for every three months. Do it in the morning and the early of evening.
