The Proper Orchid Planter
The most important thing to know about orchid planters
Orchids are some of the most beautiful flowers in the world, but people tend to think that because they are so exotic they only come from far away exotic places, but with over 7,600 different species...did you know that orchids grow in the wild in all 50 states?
Most orchids are epiphytic, so in the wild, roots are exposed to sunlight & air...because of this, it's best to plant orchids in pots where the roots can be exposed and/or have ventilation holes in the planter so air can naturally circulate around the roots as in nature.
Unfortunately, it's sometimes difficult to find suitable orchid planters at your local nursery...and when they can be found, they're often, um...ugly. At least that was the case when I began growing orchids several years ago. I'd have a gorgeous plant stuck in a butt-ugly pot.
As a pottery artist it was only natural that I take matters into my own hands and make my own planters that would be worthy of my orchids.
And now I make them for others to cherish and enjoy...so I hope you'll check out my original artisan orchid planters available in my Etsy store.

Phalaenopsis In a Robnzak Planter
This is one of my "large" size planters...a classic pure white glaze. the pot measures approx. 3 1/2" high and 8" in diameter.
New Orchid Planter Showcase
Changed and updated regularly...
Customers have been asking for larger pots and I listened and delivered. This large ball shaped pot features incised ventilation holes to allow for better air flow, easy misting and allowing the roots to grow through to the outer side of the planter makes a beautiful display. The interior of the planter was left unglazed to allow the pot to hold a bit of moisture thus recreating a natural humidity that orchids love.
Hand painted (glazed) in a bright classic white.
This pot measures approximately 6½" tall and 8½" in diameter and the planting opening is approx. 7" X 5" making it suitable for large plants. And can also be used for other soil-less plants such as air plants and certain species of fern.
This pot measures 5" across, approx. 6" tall making it suitable for small to medium plants. It also has a drain hole on the bottom.

About my "Next Generation" Orchid Planters
Customers Speak & I Listen...
When I first began making artisan orchid pots, except for the vibrant colors, they looked pretty much like the ones you'd find in a store. They were glazed inside and out, they had small vent holes near the bottom of the pot and they generally had fairly small openings.Customers asked if I could make the opening (planting area) larger to allow for easier planting and to give species that prefer "spreading out" more room yet still have the rims give support. I listened to what customers wanted and began cutting wider openings while also giving the rims a wave of sorts for stem support if needed...

And some customers wanted even more open space at the top for species of orchids that needed even more open air but less planting space so I also created an "open face" by cutting out most of one side of the planter...

Other customers told me commercial planters often have glazed interiors and that meant the walls of the planter could not hold any moisture. And that made perfect sense because orchids like a bit of humidity and I ended my practice of interior glazing...

And finally, customers seemed to think the small vent holes should be larger and not always at the bottom. They felt their plants would benefit from making the vents at all levels...top to bottom which would allow for greater air flow throughout the root system. I listened and agreed, so all my orchid pots have more and larger vents...

Yes, customers speak and I listen and because I listened to their needs my 'next generation' orchid planters provide a larger planting area and give stem & leaf support. They provide greater airflow through out the pot and help hold a bit of moisture for much desired humidity. Plus, these planters are glazed in rich subtle colors to compliment the plant without competing for attention. True artisan pots that are one of a kind, beautiful and functional.
Orchid Factoid # 1
(brief answers to questions people ask the most)
Q: What is the difference between a terrestrial and an epiphytic orchid?A: Terrestrial orchids live on the ground, usually in a water-retentive humus of rotting wood and leaves. These orchids need a constantly moist, but never soggy, medium in which to grow. Paphiopedilums and cymbidiums are examples.
Epiphytic orchids live on the branches of other plants -- usually trees. They are not parasites -- they obtain no food from the trees on which they grow. Epiphytic orchids have "air-roots" which are accustomed to drying out in between periods of rain. These orchids need an open medium in which to grow and the roots should be allowed to become moderately dry between waterings. Cattleyas, vandas, phalaenopsis, and dendrobiums are common examples.
This planter is perfect for Terrestrial orchids...
