Orchids - Precious Flowers and Beauty
In the kingdom of flowering plants, orchid rule the emerald Earth.Of over 25,000 species found worldwide, Malaysia is home to some 850 species in the peninsula and another 2,500 in Sabah and Sarawak.
To obtain such abundance, orchids are opportunist that grow in high altitudes and high in the forest canopy, along the coastal plain and among rocky ravines, with most either creeping or climbing on sturdy trunks and intertwined among long branches. A few even survive on limestone rocks and in the moist shade of the jungle floor.
Flowering Blooms
Generally when orchids blooms, inflorescence formed that may produced single to many flowers, sequentially or in mass. For sympodials, inflorenscence can arise from terminal (ancient) and/or abaxial(modern). some even arise from rhizome, as in some Bulbophyllum. Monopodials orchids have flower buds that are rotated 180 before opening, mechanism known as resupination. Not all orchid flowers resupinate. To trace resupination, one can simply observe the longitudinal line of an ovary of a flower and detect whether there was a twisting before. Otherwise as a rule of thumb, assuming the upright configuration of an orchid flower is to have the lip at the bottom of the flower, an erect inflorescence with upright flowers are resupinated, while pendulous inflorescence with upright flowers are non-resupinated.
Flowering is an exciting topic; different orchids require different triggers for flowering. Inflorescence may whither away after one floweing, or continue on for some numbers of flowering. For the former, a longer time may be needed (not in all cases) for flowering because it includes time for inflorescence development. For the latter, inflorescence initiation may be dependent or independent of triggers. Inflorescence development may not necessary follow by flowering. When the right triggers arrives, the inflorescence can produce bloom in a short time.
One of the most popular triggers for flowering is the drop temperature brought by rainfall, after which many orchids will bloom. These include those from Dendrobium, Flickingeria, Thrixspermum, etc. The most popular example is Dendrobium Crumenatum, or commonly known as the 'pigeon orchid', that will bloom exactly 9 days after a torrential rain form its dormant inflorescence that seems lifeless. Its flowers are fragrant but only last for a day or less. Flowers of Thrixspermum and Flickingeria also last for less than a day. Another example is Dendrobium anosmum that responds to low temperature brought by rainfall but its flowers can last for several days.
Orchids-Wild Beauties
Unique and Uncanny
Wild orchids plants are usually much smaller than their commercially grown hybrid counterparts.
Wild orchids are an amazing artistic display. The spectacular array of colors, patterns and sizes has evolved over millenia to make them more attractive to small insect pollinators and to take advantage of specific habitats.

The flower structure of orchids gives them their character. Some are tiny and singular; others are elongated with numerous blossoms. The tiger orchid, the world's largest at up to 3m, is random but magnificent sight of hundreds of hefty yellowish flowers pockmarked with maroon blots. In other species, the flowers are delicate little blooms less than 1cm wide.

Orchids can last for weeks or just a few days. One species opens its flowers at dawn and by noon, shrivel away. Orchids are also noted for their odorous offerings.
Orchids Help and Information
Orchids Classification
Orchidaceae (or-Kid-ACE-ee-ee). Orchids are divided into two basic growth types: monopodial and sympodial. Monopodial orchids have a central stem which grows continuously from the tip. Flowers are produced from the stem between the leaves, usually alternately from side to side. Phalaenopsis orchids are a good example. Sympodial orchids, such as cattleyas, laelias and paphiopedilums, possess a rhizome which sends out a shoot. This develops into a stem and leaves and eventually produces flowers. In time, from the base of this growth, a new shoot develops and so on in a continuous cycle. The buds are often, though not always, protected by a sheath.
"Orchidaceae"
The mid section of stems of sympodial orchids are often expanded into water-storage organs called pseudobulbs. These vary greatly in size and shape, ranging from tall and pencil-thin to bulbous and onion-like. The leaves vary too, some being soft and folded like a fan, others thick and leathery. The roots of epiphytic orchids have an outer layer or corky cells called velamen, which protects the thin, living cortex within. These adaptations allow orchids to absorb water and nutrients rapidly from raindrops, but protect roots, stems and leaves from water loss during dry periods. Most orchids are adapted to conserve water and should be cared for as such.
