Day Trippin' #3: Oregon Coast

Ranked #7,162 in Travel & Places, #195,710 overall

Where the Water Meets the Sky

The Oregon coast is a treat for the senses--miles of beautiful beaches, tide pools, and jagged rock formations, with lush rainforest hugging the shore. A gem of the Pacific Northwest, it's accessible up-close via Highway 101, a winding coastal highway with plenty of turnouts and special viewpoints for the photographer in you.

Join me on a photo journey of my favorite stretch of coast. Welcome to Day Trippin' #4: The Amazing Oregon Coast

Historic Heceta Head Lighthouse

...the most photographed lighthouse on the U.S. West Coast

Heceta Head, a 1,000-foot cliff which holds the historic lighthouse and keeper's house, located approximately 15 miles north of Florence. The lighthouse itself rises 205 feet above the ocean, and its light can be seen some 21 miles offshore.

The 56-foot tower was first illuminated in 1894, and is rated as the Oregon coast's strongest light. The nearby house, Heceta House, was built in 1893. It is now a bed and breakfast in demand for weddings and other special occasions. The spacious lawn of the lightkeeper's house is a popular site for weddings every summer. With a view for miles up the coast, you can imagine the amazing backdrop it creates for wedding photos.

Windswept Beaches

Every morning brings change

Morning on an Oregon BeachThe Oregon coast boasts miles of clean sandy beaches--a perfect place to take a long walk, a jog, or a leisurely stroll first thing in the morning. Caution: You'll have so much fun walking and talking, you might forget how far you've gone. Remember that you'll eventually have to turn around and head back to your hotel or car!

When the tide rolls out, it's no telling what you'll find: agates, shells, driftwood, and sea glass await your inspection. Every morning brings changes as the night's waves leave behind a plethora of treasures. After a storm, it's not uncommon to discover heaps of tiny twisted shells mingled in with beautiful agates in all colors. (Many jewelry designers use Oregon's agates in their work.)

Five Reasons to Head to the Oregon Coast

Why it keeps drawing me back...

1. An amazing rainforest hugging the coastline.

2. Interpretative centers like Cape Perpetua.

3. Campgrounds like beautiful Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park

4. Annual summer and fall kite festivals in Lincoln City.

5. Well-maintained hiking trails.

Reflective Sunsets

...what better place to end a day?

I admit, I'm a sucker for sunsets. With so many places to watch dusk settle over the beach, I rarely miss capturing a few reflective sunsets on the Oregon coast. This particular photo was taken near Strawberry Hill, where the sun sets over tidepools that are accessible beginning early in the morning.

Night or day, this stretch of coast is a photographer's dream. I like to arrive an hour before sunset and stay about thirty minutes afterward. Sometimes the best sunset images are the dancing colors on the clouds behind me. I didn't realize that years ago, until I turned to leave one evening and the sky behind me was an explosion of golden light tinged in pink and turquoise. My jaw literally dropped!

The Sandcastle Beachfront Motel

...a comfortable beachfront motel without the extravagant price

A couple of hours north of Heceta Head takes us to another favorite Oregon coast destination, Lincoln City. The Sandcastle is a beachfront motel in Lincoln City that has served us well for almost twenty years. Stairs take us down to the beach, where shells and agates wash ashore every night. Morning finds beachcombers strolling along the beach, filling buckets or bags with shells, sand dollars, and agates in a variety of colors. I didn't realize how beautiful agates could be until I saw a display of polished agates at an interpretive center.

I love getting up early and exploring the tidepools in Lincoln City, which are a short distance from this motel. Last time we visited, I photographed seagulls that had congregated around the tidepools, hungrily seeking snacks in the shallow pools between rocks. Even more fun was the excitement in the air as children scrambled across an area that was usually covered by water.

Oregon Sand Dunes

One of the coast's amazing natural wonders

From Florence to Coos Bay, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches for 40 miles along the scenic Oregon Coast. These ancient dunes differ from any other dunes in the entire world, and stretch farther than any other coastal sand dunes in North America. Formed by the constant force of winds, they offer both adventure and solitude for those who love to explore.

For a photographer like myself, they offered wonderful photo opportunities that I'll likely never experience quite the same again.

Oregon Coast's Rainforest

...a hiker's delight!

Oregon's rain forest is a dense space where you'll find giant-sized ferns, thick, cushy groundcover, and primitive plant forms that make Crayola's green color crayon look downright faded. Marked trails and interpretive centers abound, but it's perfectly fine to take off on your own adventure.

The Best of Both Worlds

Rock Formations Jut Across an Oregon Beach

Morning at a tidepool is a spectacular experience. Most of my tidepool photos show the usual tidepool fare - gorgeous orange-red starfish clinging to the rocks, hairy green anemones gently swaying in the shallow pools. On the Oregon coast, one of my favorite tidepool areas is also a great place to watch sea lions frolick on a rock overlooking the beach.

I captured this photo on the "back side" of Strawberry Hill, where rocks jut in unusual formations towards the Pacific. In the background, you'll notice the thick, lush rainforest, which hugs the coastline. It's the best of both worlds!

Oregon Iris

wild 'n free

This lovely iris grows along the hillsides above the coastal town of Yachats. We like taking a road we've never driven before, and exploring a new area. (Isn't that the fun of a day trip?) During our most recent drive up a winding road overlooking the Pacific, we discovered wildflowers in bloom everywhere.

Below is Columbine, which grows on a tall stem. I love its delicate red petals and gold stamen.
