Oregon Nostalgia

Back in the 1960's there were durable clothes for tough people and these companies were headquartered in Portland. Back in the 1960s, high school girls often wore their Pendleton skirts with white blouses with Peter Pan collars with their names embroidered on the colors.

Residents can see the symbol of White Stag over the city. You can visit the White Stag emblem now at Wal-Mart. White Stag originally began with the manufacturing of down-hill ski clothing and branched into additional casual sportswear.

The Jantzen diving girl motif now belongs to Perry Ellis. Everybody back in the 1960's knew the company slogan: "Just Wear a Smile and a Jantzen." Jantzen came into the national consciousness after World War I when a national advertising campaign illustrated Jantzen swim suits in Vogue and Life magazines.

Pendleton Woolen Mills is still intact as a privately held company run by the sixth generation. Pendleton has many of their own retail stores and this page features some of their products which are shown on Amazon. Nike is one of the big employers in the region.

One might notice the tradition of regional clothing innovation being kept alive by the significant presence of Oregon residents on Project Runway. They complete on a fashion reality show currently on the Lifetime cable channel, a show with excruciatingly demanding performance standards. Gretchen Jones won the 8th season and Leanne Marshall won the 5th season.

A good list for microbreweries all over Oregon including five in Eugene and one in Government Camp. Portland has more microbreweries within its city limits than any other city in the world. Portland wins other 'more' awards. Forest Park is the largest urban park in the United States with 5000 acres. Powell's is the largest bookstore in the world. And there is a significant number per capita of strip clubs.

This writer has been in the HIllsdale Brewery and Public House on Sunset Blvd which is a McMenamins business. She believes that the building housed a real estate office when she was a child, but she isn't sure. She noticed that the Carnival (of Terwillger Blvd) is no more and remembers the char-broiled burgers served by its waterfall and the amusing monkeys in the cages in the 1960's. A big shocker is that the downtown Meier and Frank building is now a hotel called the 'Nines', run by the Starwood folks.
McMenamins is way more than their brew pubs. (Think hotels,events,music,shopping,etc.) Many of the locations are former nationally registered historical landmarks, including a onetime poorhouse.
Those who are looking for food trucks will find that there is a strong presence of this dining option in Portland. To start out, you might try SW 5th and Stark or SW 10th and Alder. A guide is available with the newest additions.
