Oreo Cookies

For nearly 100 years, the Oreo has been one of America's most popular cookies. It hasn't changed much since its introduction in 1912, and countless variations and adaptations have joined the classic combination of two chocolate wafers sandwiching a sweet white cream.

No matter how you eat it (a matter of great debate), the Oreo is one of America's all-time greatest treats.

Everything you need to know about eating an Oreo

This video is eight minutes of a guy explaining how to eat Oreos, and it is worth every second. Don't miss the "cookies and cream" explanation at the end.

The Twist

Some people have very strong opinions about how to eat an Oreo.

The Oreo Timeline

As you can see from the timeline, very little has changed for the classic Oreo.
  • 1912 - The first Oreo
    • The similar (ok, the same) Hydrox cookie had already been around for four years when the Oreo was introduced, but the superior Oreo was more popular almost immediately.
  • 1920s - No more lemons
    • Lemon meringue filling is discontinued.
  • 1952 - The wafer design
    • The Nabisco logo is added to the embossed design on the chocolate wafers.
  • 1975 - The stuff doubles
    • The Double Stuf Oreo, with twice as much cream filling as the original, is introduced.
  • 1980s - Two flavors in one and oversized Oreos
    • Double Delight Oreos hit the market with two cream flavors in each cookie. Combinations include mint and cream and peanut butter and chocolate.
    • Big Stuf Oreos were huge versions of the original that had 316 calories per cookie.
  • 1990s - Shrinking and colorful Oreos
    • The bite-sized Mini Oreos hit stores.
    • The classic Oreo gets a colorful makeover a few times a year, with yellow or blue filling in the spring, orange at Halloween, and red at Christmas.
    • Oreo-Os cereal makes it acceptable to eat Oreos for breakfast.
  • 2000s - Another flavor and a snack cake
    • The 1½-stuffed Chocolate Creme Oreo is released in full-size and Mini.
    • Oreo Cakesters, soft chocolate snack cakes sandwiching white or chocolate creme, are the latest variation on the original cookie.

The Oreo Pizza

Domino's has recently introduced the Oreo Pizza, a 10-inch dessert crust topped with vanilla sauce, Oreos, and white icing. (In other words, a sugar pizza topped with sugar, cookies, and sugar.) I don't doubt that it tastes good, but I do question the advertising team that decided this commercial was a good idea. The Oreo mustache gets a reaction from my stomach, but I suspect it's not the reaction they were hoping for.
