Commercial Chicken Facilities - Animal Cruelty?
We have been raising chickens for several years now. There are varying recommendations for the appropriate amount of minimum space per chicken from 1 1/2 square feet to 10 square feet. This variance is based upon how the chickens are kept; chicken coop with run or chicken coop only. I can assure you that our chickens have much more than 10 square feet of space per bird to roam and to just be chickens. After watching the Cornucopia Institute video entitled "Scrambled Eggs", I was shocked to learn how factory farm chickens are treated. In my opinion, their treatment is nothing less than animal abuse / animal cruelty.
In the video, factory farms chickens were shown in buildings containing thousands upon thousands of chickens on top of each other from floor to ceiling. Now keep in mind that these factory farms provide the general public with their meat and eggs. Wait, it gets better. Now we know that some factory farm chickens are kept in horrible living conditions. Lets talk about their diet. These chickens are pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones so they mature to the desired weight much faster. I have actually talked to local people that indicated they were inside of one of these factory chicken farms and saw chickens falling over dead from heart attacks due to their diet. And to think consumers are feeding their families poultry and eggs from these factories.
We have primarily raised bantam chickens as a hobby. After learning about chicken farm factories, we have decided to begin pasture raising hens for egg production. Bottom line, not only do I now not trust the poultry and eggs in our local grocery stores; I am disgusted by how the chickens are treated in these factories. I will no longer support these factories. While I would hope that not all poultry farm factories utilized such deplorable and unethical breeding tactics - how do we know for sure what is in our grocery stores? I know that I can trust eggs from chickens we raise on our farm in a pasture raised environment. I would suggest that everyone visit your local farmer's markets.

- I was just thinking about this topic this morning. Glad I found your lens. It's awful how they treat these chickens. I always eat free range eggs. Much better for you and I feel good knowing they don't live in such deplorable conditions.

- I hate animals that get trapped inside and can't go out... unbelievable that the "big guys" actually tried to say that the chickens do not like to go outside... they are animals people!!! All animals live outside (before humans came and made houses for them, anyway).
