Everything you need to know about organic food

Organic food has been taking off in a big way over the last couple of years. Many of us are switching to it, but it's a big subject and can be quite overwhelming! That's why I am here - to provide all the information you need so that you can decide if organic food is for you.
Please give me a shout if you can't find the answer to your question. I will do my best to provide that answer.

Organic food for Children?

Be smart - give organic food to your child

Public awareness of the benefits of organically grown and produced foods is growing. Research has shown that organic foods are more nutritious and contain no synthetic chemical pesticide residues. Certified organic foods also contain no synthetic additives such as flavourings, colourants and preservatives.

This means that switching to organically produced food is a great idea, not only for adults, but especially for your children. In giving organic food to your children you are choosing to give them a head start on health. You are providing them with greater nutrition and saving them from damage to their health caused by intensively manufactured foods.

A child is a human being in the process of developing. As their organs, brain and immune system develop they do so under the influence of what is being taken into their body. Common sense, as well as research, tells us that in order to achieve the optimum growth the child needs a diet high in nutrition and low in toxins.

Studies have shown that organically produced milk, for instance, contains as much as sixty percent more healthy fatty acids and antioxidants than milk produced by conventional, factory farmed methods. This means that not only is organic milk more humane in terms of animal welfare, it's also better for us. Fruits and vegetables produced by organic methods contain as much as forty percent more antioxidants than conventional types.

On a more subjective level, organic food often tastes better, too. In many cases, it's built on a local model of production, so your food gets to you more quickly and is fresher. A little known fact is that children have more taste receptors than adults and therefore a stronger sense of taste. Be smart and let your child acquire the taste of fresh organic produce rather than the synthetic flavourings of conventional food.

There are many health risks in eating intensively farmed, non-organic foods. Feeding organic food to your child means a lower chance of heavy metal contamination, fewer allergies, and fewer pesticide residues and other synthetic and toxic chemicals.

Giving the benefits of organics to your child can even start before he or she is born. If pregnant women drink organic milk, and consume other foods from organic sources, their babies have a lower chance of developing serious allergies in the future. Women who drink organic milk while pregnant produce more antibodies that help protect their children against asthma, allergies, and other childhood health conditions.

The evidence available is conclusive - organic foods are better, for adults and even more so for children. Since children need the best nutrition they can get while growing up, feeding organic food to your child is a great way to give it to them.

Look for quality fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products from certified organic sources. If you can buy locally that's even better, since it reduces the distance your food will have to travel, ensuring that it will arrive in the best condition, and decreasing the amount of carbon released while shipping it.

Remember - the quality of the food you and your kids eat is important. There is a lot in the well known saying - we are what we eat!. Give organic food to your child - it's the smart choice.

Hi

Thought for the month

What is one of the main ways by which a parent shows love for her/his child? Keeping the child from harm is, perhaps, the most instinctive way.

For around 60 years, mainly due to ignorance and the actions of cynical governments, most parents have been failing to keep their children from harm by feeding them foods laced with poisons.

Harsh words but true.

Increasingly though, as we are becoming more awake to the dangers of intensively produced foods and the benefits of those produced organically, parents are showing love for their children in action, not just words.

Malini Saigal for example, a single parent, says: "You keep hearing about pesticides in food, liver damage, arsenic poisoning%u2026he's a growing boy with a hearty appetite. God forbid if something should happen to him at 35 because of what he is eating now." Read how and why she has 'insured' her son's future health organically - Click here

Still on the subject of organic food health benefits - How a young girl with a rare blood disease became an award-winning organic healer

Rosukon Poompanvong, was born in 1955 in Thailand. When she was found to have a rare blood disease her family moved away from their chemically-polluted land, to fertile forest that had not been poisoned by intensive farming methods.

Rosukon went on to become a champion sportswoman and an award-winning alternative healer. Today she runs her own health farm/hospital, receiving over 20,000 queries per month from over 60 countries. Behind her success is organic produce. Read her story

Organic Whisky purges soil of chemicals.
