Organic Gardening in Kentucky

Ranked #9,944 in Home & Garden, #157,494 overall

I love organic food. I have an organic garden too.

Kentucky is a great place to grow a garden.

Before it was a state, Kentucky was a favorite hunting spot for several local Native American nations, among whom may have been the Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Shawnee tribes.

Some controlled burning to improve wildlife areas was done during this time; and experts are still doing this today in some areas.

Kentucky has many fertile areas and a long growing season. So it's a good place to have a garden.

A good reason to have a garden is that growing your own food has many advantages. You can save money, AND know that your food is fresh and safe to eat.

Organic Gardening in Kentucky

Organic Gardening - a definition

Organic Gardening uses natural vs. artificial agents to control insects and disease, along with other environmentally friendly methods.

Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes...

I think tomatoes are a very popular crop for Kentuckians.

Beautiful tomatoes

Of course, the favorite crop in Kentucky for a long time USED to be tobacco. But I think tomatoes are a favorite for home gardeners. They are sure MY favorite.

There is nothing like biting into a home-grown tomato. Mmmmmmm.

And when you are growing the tomatoes organically, you know that you are not eating unhealthy pesticide coating.

I like this gardening photo. St0rmz on Morguefile has some other sites where you can see more of his photos:

Of course, peppers grow very well in Kentucky too.

All kinds of peppers grow well here in Kentucky.

You can grow all kinds, shapes, and colors of peppers. Be careful to know exactly WHERE the hot ones are located though. Sampling a hot pepper by mistake can wake you up fast.

Flowers grow well in Kentucky as well!

Aren't these pretty?

Beautiful flowers

Organic Seeds and Plants

Step One: find some good seeds

You can find some good seed catalogs online.

I like the fact that you can collect seeds from your heritage plants and re-plant the same varieties next year.

Check the link below for some great companies you can buy heritage seeds from.

Next year, I hope to have an organic garden in The Garden Spot where I live.

I found some of the art on this page from the Clker site online. It features lots of good, free clipart.

I like to shop at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's because their organic produce tastes so much better than the produce I used to buy in "regular" stores.

It's so nice that you came by this lens today. I appreciate it so much.
